THE SHORTNESS OF OUR LIFE
Lu 12:16 And he spoke a parable to them, saying, The ground of a
certain rich man brought forth plentifully:
17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no
room where to bestow my fruits?
18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater;
and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.
19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have much goods laid up for many
years; take your ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
20 But God said to him, You fool, this night your soul shall be required of
you: then whose shall those things be, which you have provided?
21 So is he that lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.
1 Cor 15:19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of
all men most miserable.
20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the first fruits of
them that slept.
Jas 4:13 Go to now, you that say, To day or to morrow we will go into
such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:
14 Whereas you know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life?
It is even a vapor, that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away.
15 For that you ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this,
or that.
16 But now you rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.
1 Pe 1:24 For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the
flower of grass. The grass wither, and the flower thereof falls away:
25 But the word of the Lord endures for ever. And this is the word which by
the gospel is preached to you.
2 Sam 14:14 For we must needs die, and are as water spilt on the
ground, which cannot be gathered up again; neither does God respect any
person: yet does he devise means, that his banished be not expelled from him.
1 Ch 29:14 But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be
able to offer so willingly after this sort? for all things come of you, and
of your own have we given you.
15 For we are strangers before you, and sojourners, as were all our fathers:
our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding.
Job 8:9 (For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our
days on earth are a shadow:)
8:11 Can the rush grow up without mire? can the flag grow without water?
12 Whilst it is yet in his greenness, and not cut down, it wither before any
other herb.
13 So are the paths of all that forget God; and the hypocrite’s hope shall
perish:
14 Whose hope shall be cut off, and whose trust shall be a spider’s web.
15 He shall lean on his house, but it shall not stand: he shall hold it fast,
but it shall not endure.
16 He is green before the sun, and his branch shoots forth in his garden.
17 His roots are wrapped about the heap, and sees the place of stones.
18 If he destroy him from his place, then it shall deny him, saying, I have
not seen you.
19 Behold, this is the joy of his way, and out of the earth shall others
grow.
14:1 Man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble.
2 He comes forth like a flower, and is cut down: he flees also as a shadow,
and continues not.
3 And does you open your eyes on such an one, and bring me into judgment
with you?
4 Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.
5 Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with you, you
have appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;
20:5 That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the
hypocrite but for a moment?
6 Though his excellency mount up to the heavens, and his head reach to the
clouds;
7 Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung: they which have seen him
shall say, Where is he?
8 He shall fly away as a dream, and shall not be found: yes, he shall be
chased away as a vision of the night.
9 The eye also which saw him shall see him no more; neither shall his place
any more behold him.
Ps 37:9 For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait on the
LORD, they shall inherit the earth.
10 For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yes, you shall
diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.
37:34 Wait on the LORD, and keep his way, and he shall exalt you to inherit
the land: when the wicked are cut off, you shall see it.
35 I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green
bay tree.
36 Yet he passed away, and, see, he was not: yes, I sought him, but he could
not be found.
37 Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is
peace.
38 But the transgressors shall be destroyed together: the end of the wicked
shall be cut off.
39:4 LORD, make me to know my end, and the measure of my days, what it is:
that I may know how frail I am.
5 Behold, you have made my days as an handbreadth; and my age is as nothing
before you: truly every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah.
6 Surely every man walks in a vain show: surely they are disquieted in vain:
he heaps up riches, and knows not who shall gather them.
39:11 When you with rebukes do correct man for iniquity, you make his beauty
to consume away like a moth: surely every man is vanity. Selah.
62:9 Surely men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie:
to be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity.
78:38 But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and
destroyed them not: yes, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not
stir up all his wrath.
39 For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passes away, and
comes not again.
90:3 You turn man to destruction; and say, Return, you children of men.
4 For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past,
and as a watch in the night.
5 You carry them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: in the morning
they are like grass which grows up.
6 In the morning it flourishes, and grows up; in the evening it is cut down,
and wither.
90:10 The days of our years are three score years and ten; and if by reason
of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labor and sorrow;
for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
11 Who knows the power of your anger? even according to your fear, so is
your wrath.
12 So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts to wisdom.
94:11 The LORD knows the thoughts of man, that they are vanity.
103:14 For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust.
15 As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he
flourishes.
16 For the wind passes over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall
know it no more.
17 But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting on them that
fear him, and his righteousness to children’s children;
144:3 LORD, what is man, that you take knowledge of him! or the son of man,
that you make account of him!
4 Man is like to vanity: his days are as a shadow that passes away.
Ec 6:12 For who knows what is good for man in this life, all the days
of his vain life which he spends as a shadow? for who can tell a man what
shall be after him under the sun?
7:1 A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than
the day of one’s birth.
2 It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of
feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his
heart.
12:1 Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth, while the evil
days come not, nor the years draw near, when you shall say, I have no
pleasure in them;
2 While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened,
nor the clouds return after the rain:
3 In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men
shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those
that look out of the windows be darkened,
4 And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding
is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters
of music shall be brought low;
5 Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be
in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be
a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goes to his long home, and the
mourners go about the streets:
6 Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the
pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.
7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall
return to God who gave it.
8 Vanity of vanities, said the preacher; all is vanity.
Isa 40:6 The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All
flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field:
7 The grass wither, the flower fades: because the spirit of the LORD blows
on it: surely the people is grass.
8 The grass wither, the flower fades: but the word of our God shall stand
for ever.
