EARTHLY OR HEAVENLY TREASURE?
Mt 6:19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and
rust does corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor
rust does corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
13:22 He also that received seed among the thorns is he that hears the word;
and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word,
and he becomes unfruitful.
13:44 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like to treasure hid in a field; the
which when a man has found, he hides, and for joy thereof goes and sells all
that he has, and buys that field.
45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like to a merchant man, seeking goodly
pearls:
46 Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that
he had, and bought it.
16:25 For whoever will save his life shall lose it: and whoever will lose
his life for my sake shall find it.
26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose
his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
Mr 10:17 And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one
running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do
that I may inherit eternal life?
18 And Jesus said to him, Why call you me good? there is none good but one,
that is, God.
19 You know the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not
steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honor your father and mother.
20 And he answered and said to him, Master, all these have I observed from
my youth.
21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said to him, One thing you lack:
go your way, sell whatever you have, and give to the poor, and you shall
have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.
22 And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great
possessions.
23 And Jesus looked round about, and said to his disciples, How hardly shall
they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!
24 And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answers again,
and said to them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to
enter into the kingdom of God!
25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a
rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
26 And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, Who
then can be saved?
27 And Jesus looking on them said, With men it is impossible, but not with
God: for with God all things are possible.
Lu 12:15 And he said to them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness:
for a man’s life consists not in the abundance of the things which he
possesses.
16 And he spoke a parable to them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man
brought forth plentifully:
17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no
room where to bestow my fruits?
18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater;
and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.
19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have much goods laid up for many
years; take your ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
20 But God said to him, You fool, this night your soul shall be required of
you: then whose shall those things be, which you have provided?
21 So is he that lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.
12:32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give
you the kingdom.
33 Sell that you have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not
old, a treasure in the heavens that fails not, where no thief approaches,
neither moth corrupts.
34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
14:15 And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he
said to him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.
16 Then said he to him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many:
17 And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come;
for all things are now ready.
18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said to him,
I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray you
have me excused.
19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them:
I pray you have me excused.
20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.
17:32 Remember Lot’s wife.
33 Whoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whoever shall lose
his life shall preserve it.
Joh 6:27 Labor not for the meat which perishes, but for that meat
which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give to you:
for him has God the Father sealed.
Rom 12:16 Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high
things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own
conceits.
1 Cor 15:19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of
all men most miserable.
20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the first fruits of
them that slept.
Php 3:7 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for
Christ.
8 Yes doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the
knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all
things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,
3:12 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but
I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended
of Christ Jesus.
13 Brothers, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do,
forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth to those things
which are before,
14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in
Christ Jesus.
1 Tim 6:6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.
7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry
nothing out.
8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.
9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many
foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted
after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with
many sorrows.
6:12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto you
are also called, and have professed a good profession before many witnesses.
6:17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not high minded,
nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who gives us richly
all things to enjoy;
18 That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute,
willing to communicate;
19 Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to
come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.
2 Tim 4:6 For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my
departure is at hand.
7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the
faith:
8 From now on there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the
Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only,
but to all them also that love his appearing.
4:10 For Demas has forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is
departed to Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia.
11 Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with you: for he is
profitable to me for the ministry.
Heb 11:24 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be
called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter;
25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to
enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;
26 Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in
Egypt: for he had respect to the recompense of the reward.
27 By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he
endured, as seeing him who is invisible.
Jas 1:9 Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted:
10 But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass
he shall pass away.
11 For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it wither the
grass, and the flower thereof falls, and the grace of the fashion of it
perishes: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.
4:4 You adulterers and adulteresses, know you not that the friendship of the
world is enmity with God? whoever therefore will be a friend of the world is
the enemy of God.
5 Do you think that the scripture said in vain, The spirit that dwells in us
lusts to envy?
4:13 Go to now, you that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a
city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:
14 Whereas you know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life?
It is even a vapor, that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away.
15 For that you ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this,
or that.
16 But now you rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.
5:1 Go to now, you rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come
on you.
2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten.
3 Your gold and silver is corroded; and the rust of them shall be a witness
against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. You have heaped
treasure together for the last days.
4 Behold, the hire of the laborers who have reaped down your fields, which
is of you kept back by fraud, cries: and the cries of them which have reaped
are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth.
5 You have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; you have
nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter.
6 You have condemned and killed the just; and he does not resist you.
1 Joh 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the
world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the
eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
17 And the world passes away, and the lust thereof: but he that does the
will of God stays for ever.
Rev 18:15 The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her,
shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing,
16 And saying, Alas, alas that great city, that was clothed in fine linen,
and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and
pearls!
Gen 19:26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a
pillar of salt.
De 8:12 Lest when you have eaten and are full, and have built goodly
houses, and dwelled therein;
13 And when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and your
gold is multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied;
14 Then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the LORD your God, which
brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;
Job 22:25 Yes, the Almighty shall be your defense, and you shall have
plenty of silver.
26 For then shall you have your delight in the Almighty, and shall lift up
your face to God.
Ps 17:13 Arise, O LORD, disappoint him, cast him down: deliver my
soul from the wicked, which is your sword:
14 From men which are your hand, O LORD, from men of the world, which have
their portion in this life, and whose belly you fill with your hid treasure:
they are full of children, and leave the rest of their substance to their
babes.
37:16 A little that a righteous man has is better than the riches of many
wicked.
17 For the arms of the wicked shall be broken: but the LORD upholds the
righteous.
18 The LORD knows the days of the upright: and their inheritance shall be
for ever.
49:10 For he sees that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish
person perish, and leave their wealth to others.
11 Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and
their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their
own names.
12 Nevertheless man being in honor stays not: he is like the beasts that
perish.
13 This their way is their folly: yet their posterity approve their sayings.
Selah.
14 Like sheep they are laid in the grave; death shall feed on them; and the
upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their beauty shall
consume in the grave from their dwelling.
49:16 Be not you afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house
is increased;
17 For when he dies he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend
after him.
18 Though while he lived he blessed his soul: and men will praise you, when
you do well to yourself.
19 He shall go to the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light.
73:26 My flesh and my heart fails: but God is the strength of my heart, and
my portion for ever.
Pr 11:17 The merciful man does good to his own soul: but he that is
cruel troubles his own flesh.
18 The wicked works a deceitful work: but to him that sows righteousness
shall be a sure reward.
19 As righteousness tends to life: so he that pursues evil pursues it to his
own death.
11:28 He that trusts in his riches shall fall; but the righteous shall
flourish as a branch.
13:8 The ransom of a man’s life are his riches: but the poor hears not
rebuke.
13:22 A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children: and the
wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.
15:16 Better is little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure and
trouble therewith.
22:3 A prudent man foresees the evil, and hides himself: but the simple pass
on, and are punished.
23:4 Labor not to be rich: cease from your own wisdom.
5 Will you set your eyes on that which is not? for riches certainly make
themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.
27:1 Boast not yourself of to morrow; for you know not what a day may bring
forth.
27:12 A prudent man foresees the evil, and hides himself; but the simple
pass on, and are punished.
30:7 Two things have I required of you; deny me them not before I die:
8 Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches;
feed me with food convenient for me:
9 Lest I be full, and deny you, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor,
and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.
Ec 1:2 Vanity of vanities, said the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all
is vanity.
3 What profit has a man of all his labor which he takes under the sun?
14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all
is vanity and vexation of spirit.
2:4 I made me great works; I built me houses; I planted me vineyards:
5 I made me gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kind of
fruits:
6 I made me pools of water, to water therewith the wood that brings forth
trees:
7 I got me servants and maidens, and had servants born in my house; also I
had great possessions of great and small cattle above all that were in
Jerusalem before me:
8 I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and
of the provinces: I got me men singers and women singers, and the delights
of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts.
9 So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in
Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me.
10 And whatever my eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my
heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labor: and this was my
portion of all my labor.
11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had worked, and on the labor
that I had labored to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit,
and there was no profit under the sun.
2:15 Then said I in my heart, As it happens to the fool, so it happens even
to me; and why was I then more wise? Then I said in my heart, that this also
is vanity.
16 For there is no remembrance of the wise more than of the fool for ever;
seeing that which now is in the days to come shall all be forgotten. And how
dies the wise man? as the fool.
17 Therefore I hated life; because the work that is worked under the sun is
grievous to me: for all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
18 Yes, I hated all my labor which I had taken under the sun: because I
should leave it to the man that shall be after me.
19 And who knows whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? yet shall he have
rule over all my labor wherein I have labored, and wherein I have showed
myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity.
20 Therefore I went about to cause my heart to despair of all the labor
which I took under the sun.
21 For there is a man whose labor is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in
equity; yet to a man that has not labored therein shall he leave it for his
portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.
4:6 Better is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with
travail and vexation of spirit.
7 Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun.
8 There is one alone, and there is not a second; yes, he has neither child
nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labor; neither is his eye
satisfied with riches; neither said he, For whom do I labor, and bereave my
soul of good? This is also vanity, yes, it is a sore travail.
5:10 He that loves silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that
loves abundance with increase: this is also vanity.
11 When goods increase, they are increased that eat them: and what good is
there to the owners thereof, saving the beholding of them with their eyes?
12 The sleep of a laboring man is sweet, whether he eat little or much: but
the abundance of the rich will not suffer him to sleep.
5:15 As he came forth of his mother’s womb, naked shall he return to go as
he came, and shall take nothing of his labor, which he may carry away in his
hand.
16 And this also is a sore evil, that in all points as he came, so shall he
go: and what profit has he that has labored for the wind?
6:1 There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among
men:
2 A man to whom God has given riches, wealth, and honor, so that he wants
nothing for his soul of all that he desires, yet God gives him not power to
eat thereof, but a stranger eats it: this is vanity, and it is an evil
disease.
3 If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days
of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he
have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.
4 For he comes in with vanity, and departs in darkness, and his name shall
be covered with darkness.
5 Moreover he has not seen the sun, nor known any thing: this has more rest
than the other.
6 Yes, though he live a thousand years twice told, yet has he seen no good:
do not all go to one place?
6:7 All the labor of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not
filled.
