IDOLATRY
Mt 4:8 Again, the devil takes him up into an exceeding high mountain,
and shows him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
9 And said to him, All these things will I give you, if you will fall down
and worship me.
10 Then said Jesus to him, Get you hence, Satan: for it is written, You
shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.
Acts 12:21 And on a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat on
his throne, and made an oration to them.
22 And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of
a man.
23 And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God
the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.
24 But the word of God grew and multiplied.
14:11 And when the people saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their
voices, saying in the speech of Lycaonia, The gods are come down to us in
the likeness of men.
12 And they called Barnabas, Jupiter; and Paul, Mercurius, because he was
the chief speaker.
13 Then the priest of Jupiter, which was before their city, brought oxen and
garlands to the gates, and would have done sacrifice with the people.
14 Which when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard of, they rent their
clothes, and ran in among the people, crying out,
15 And saying, Sirs, why do you these things? We also are men of like
passions with you, and preach to you that you should turn from these
vanities to the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and
all things that are therein:
16 Who in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways.
17 Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good,
and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with
food and gladness.
18 And with these sayings scarce restrained they the people, that they had
not done sacrifice to them.
15:19 Why my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the
Gentiles are turned to God:
20 But that we write to them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols,
and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.
17:16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in
him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.
22 Then Paul stood in the middle of Mars’ hill, and said, You men of Athens,
I perceive that in all things you are too superstitious.
23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this
inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore you ignorantly worship, him
declare I to you.
24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of
heaven and earth, dwells not in temples made with hands;
25 Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing,
seeing he gives to all life, and breath, and all things;
26 And has made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face
of the earth, and has determined the times before appointed, and the bounds
of their habitation;
27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and
find him, though he be not far from every one of us:
28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your
own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.
29 For as much then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think
that the Godhead is like to gold, or silver, or stone, graven by are and
man’s device.
30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commands all men
every where to repent:
31 Because he has appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in
righteousness by that man whom he has ordained; whereof he has given
assurance to all men, in that he has raised him from the dead.
32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and
others said, We will hear you again of this matter.
19:23 And the same time there arose no small stir about that way.
24 For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver
shrines for Diana, brought no small gain to the craftsmen;
25 Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said,
Sirs, you know that by this craft we have our wealth.
26 Moreover you see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost
throughout all Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away much people,
saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands:
27 So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nothing; but
also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her
magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worships.
28 And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried
out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.
Rom 1:19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them;
for God has showed it to them.
20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are
clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal
power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither
were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish
heart was darkened.
22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
23 And changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like to
corruptible man, and to birds, and four footed beasts, and creeping things.
24 Why God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own
hearts, to dishonor their own bodies between themselves:
25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the
creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
1 Cor 5:9 I wrote to you in an letter not to company with fornicators:
10 Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the
covetous, or extortionists, or with idolaters; for then must you needs go
out of the world.
11 But now I have written to you not to keep company, if any man that is
called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler,
or a drunkard, or an extortionist; with such an one no not to eat.
6:9 Know you not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God?
Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor
effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortionists,
shall inherit the kingdom of God.
8:1 Now as touching things offered to idols, we know that we all have
knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but charity edifies.
2 And if any man think that he knows any thing, he knows nothing yet as he
ought to know.
3 But if any man love God, the same is known of him.
4 As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in
sacrifice to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that
there is none other God but one.
5 For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth,
(as there be gods many, and lords many,)
6 But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we
in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.
7 However, there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with
conscience of the idol to this hour eat it as a thing offered to an idol;
and their conscience being weak is defiled.
10:5 But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were
overthrown in the wilderness.
6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after
evil things, as they also lusted.
7 Neither be you idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The
people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.
10:14 Why, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.
15 I speak as to wise men; judge you what I say.
10:19 What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered
in sacrifice to idols is any thing?
20 But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice
to devils, and not to God: and I would not that you should have fellowship
with devils.
21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: you cannot
be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils.
22 Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?
12:2 You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, even
as you were led.
2 Cor 6:15 And what concord has Christ with Belial? or what part has
he that believes with an infidel?
16 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? for you are the
temple of the living God; as God has said, I will dwell in them, and walk in
them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Gal 4:8 However, then, when you knew not God, you did service to them
which by nature are no gods.
9 But now, after that you have known God, or rather are known of God, how
turn you again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto you desire again
to be in bondage?
5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery,
fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, jealousies, wrath, strife,
seditions, heresies,
21 Contentions, murders, drunkenness, revelings, and such like: of the which
I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do
such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
Eph 5:5 For this you know, that no fornicator, nor unclean person,
nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of
Christ and of God.
Col 2:18 Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary
humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he has
not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,
1 Th 1:9 For they themselves show of us what manner of entering in we
had to you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and
true God;
1 Pe 4:3 For the time past of our life may suffice us to have worked
the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of
wine, revelings, parties, and abominable idolatries:
1 Joh 5:21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
Rev 9:20 And the rest of the men which were not killed by these
plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not
worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of
wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk:
21 Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of
their fornication, nor of their thefts.
14:9 And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man
worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in
his hand,
10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out
without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented
with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the
presence of the Lamb:
11 And the smoke of their torment ascends up for ever and ever: and they
have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever
receives the mark of his name.
21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers,
and fornicators, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have
their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone: which is the
second death.
22:8 And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and
seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which showed me
these things.
9 Then said he to me, See you do it not: for I am your fellow servant, and
of your brothers the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this
book: worship God.
22:14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to
the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and fornicators, and murderers, and
idolaters, and whoever loves and makes a lie.
Gen 31:19 And Laban went to shear his sheep: and Rachel had stolen
the images that were her father’s.
35:2 Then Jacob said to his household, and to all that were with him, Put
away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your
garments:
3 And let us arise, and go up to Bethel; and I will make there an altar to
God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way
which I went.
4 And they gave to Jacob all the strange gods which were in their hand, and
all their earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the
oak which was by Shechem.
Ex 20:2 I am the LORD your God, which have brought you out of the
land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
3 You shall have no other gods before me.
4 You shall not make to you any graven image, or any likeness of any thing
that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the
water under the earth.
5 You shall not bow down yourself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD
your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the
children to the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
6 And showing mercy to thousands of them that love me, and keep my
commandments.
7 You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain; for the LORD
will not hold him guiltless that takes his name in vain.
23:13 And in all things that I have said to you be circumspect: and make no
mention of the name of other gods, neither let it be heard out of your mouth.
23:24 You shall not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor do after
their works: but you shall utterly overthrow them, and quite break down
their images.
32 You shall make no covenant with them, nor with their gods.
32:1 And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the
mount, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron, and said to him, Up,
make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that
brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we know not what is become of him.
2 And Aaron said to them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the
ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them to
me.
3 And all the people broke off the golden earrings which were in their ears,
and brought them to Aaron.
4 And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a engraving tool,
after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be your gods, O
Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
5 And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made
proclamation, and said, To morrow is a feast to the LORD.
6 And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and
brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and
rose up to play.
7 And the LORD said to Moses, Go, get you down; for your people, which you
brought out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves:
8 They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they
have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed
thereunto, and said, These be your gods, O Israel, which have brought you up
out of the land of Egypt.
34:12 Take heed to yourself, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants
of the land where you go, lest it be for a snare in the middle of you:
13 But you shall destroy their altars, break their images, and cut down
their groves:
14 For you shall worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous,
is a jealous God:
Lev 17:7 And they shall no more offer their sacrifices to devils,
after whom they have gone a whoring. This shall be a statute for ever to
them throughout their generations.
19:4 Turn you not to idols, nor make to yourselves molten gods: I am the
LORD your God.
26:1 You shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither raise you up a
standing image, neither shall you set up any image of stone in your land, to
bow down to it: for I am the LORD your God.
Num 25:1 And Israel stayed in Shittim, and the people began to commit
prostitution with the daughters of Moab.
2 And they called the people to the sacrifices of their gods: and the people
did eat, and bowed down to their gods.
3 And Israel joined himself to Baalpeor: and the anger of the LORD was
kindled against Israel.
De 4:15 Take you therefore good heed to yourselves; for you saw no
manner of similitude on the day that the LORD spoke to you in Horeb out of
the middle of the fire:
16 Lest you corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude
of any figure, the likeness of male or female,
7:5 But thus shall you deal with them; you shall destroy their altars, and
break down their images, and cut down their groves, and burn their graven
images with fire.
7:25 The graven images of their gods shall you burn with fire: you shall not
desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it to you, lest you be
snared therein: for it is an abomination to the LORD your God.
26 Neither shall you bring an abomination into your house, lest you be a
cursed thing like it: but you shall utterly detest it, and you shall utterly
abhor it; for it is a cursed thing.
16:22 Neither shall you set you up any image; which the LORD your God hates.
32:17 They sacrificed to devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to
new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not.
18 Of the Rock that begat you you are unmindful, and have forgotten God that
formed you.
32:21 They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God; they have
provoked me to anger with their vanities: and I will move them to jealousy
with those which are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a
foolish nation.
Jos 24:2 And Joshua said to all the people, Thus said the LORD God of
Israel, Your fathers dwelled on the other side of the flood in old time,
even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nachor: and they served
other gods.
15 And if it seem evil to you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom
you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the
other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you
dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
Judges 2:10 And also all that generation were gathered to their
fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the
LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.
11 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and served
Baalim:
12 And they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them out of
the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that
were round about them, and bowed themselves to them, and provoked the LORD
to anger.
10:10 And the children of Israel cried to the LORD, saying, We have sinned
against you, both because we have forsaken our God, and also served Baalim.
16 And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served the LORD:
and his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel.
17:1 And there was a man of mount Ephraim, whose name was Micah.
2 And he said to his mother, The eleven hundred shekels of silver that were
taken from you, about which you cursed, and spoke of also in my ears, behold,
the silver is with me; I took it. And his mother said, Blessed be you of the
LORD, my son.
3 And when he had restored the eleven hundred shekels of silver to his
mother, his mother said, I had wholly dedicated the silver to the LORD from
my hand for my son, to make a graven image and a molten image: now therefore
I will restore it to you.
4 Yet he restored the money to his mother; and his mother took two hundred
shekels of silver, and gave them to the founder, who made thereof a graven
image and a molten image: and they were in the house of Micah.
5 And the man Micah had an house of gods, and made an ephod, and teraphim,
and consecrated one of his sons, who became his priest.
6 In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which
was right in his own eyes.
1 Sam 7:3 And Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, If you
do return to the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods
and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts to the LORD, and serve
him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.
4 Then the children of Israel did put away Baalim and Ashtaroth, and served
the LORD only.
19:12 So Michal let David down through a window: and he went, and fled, and
escaped.
13 And Michal took an image, and laid it in the bed, and put a pillow of
goats’ hair for his bolster, and covered it with a cloth.
1 Ki 12:26 And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom
return to the house of David:
27 If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the LORD at
Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again to their lord,
even to Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to
Rehoboam king of Judah.
28 Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said to
them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold your gods, O
Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
29 And he set the one in Bethel, and the other put he in Dan.
30 And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the
one, even to Dan.
31 And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of
the people, which were not of the sons of Levi.
32 And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day
of the month, like to the feast that is in Judah, and he offered on the
altar. So did he in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves that he had made: and
he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made.
16:30 And Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the LORD above all
that were before him.
31 And it came to pass, as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in
the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took to wife Jezebel the
daughter of Ethbaal king of the Zidonians, and went and served Baal, and
worshipped him.
32 And he reared up an altar for Baal in the house of Baal, which he had
built in Samaria.
33 And Ahab made a grove; and Ahab did more to provoke the LORD God of
Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel that were before him.
18:21 And Elijah came to all the people, and said, How long halt you between
two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him.
And the people answered him not a word.
19:18 Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have
not bowed to Baal, and every mouth which has not kissed him.
2 Ki 3:26 And when the king of Moab saw that the battle was too sore
for him, he took with him seven hundred men that drew swords, to break
through even to the king of Edom: but they could not.
27 Then he took his oldest son that should have reigned in his stead, and
offered him for a burnt offering on the wall. And there was great
indignation against Israel: and they departed from him, and returned to
their own land.
17:29 However, every nation made gods of their own, and put them in the
houses of the high places which the Samaritans had made, every nation in
their cities wherein they dwelled.
30 And the men of Babylon made Succothbenoth, and the men of Cuth made
Nergal, and the men of Hamath made Ashima,
31 And the Avites made Nibhaz and Tartak, and the Sepharvites burnt their
children in fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim.
32 So they feared the LORD, and made to themselves of the lowest of them
priests of the high places, which sacrificed for them in the houses of the
high places.
33 They feared the LORD, and served their own gods, after the manner of the
nations whom they carried away from there.
34 To this day they do after the former manners: they fear not the LORD,
neither do they after their statutes, or after their ordinances, or after
the law and commandment which the LORD commanded the children of Jacob, whom
he named Israel;
41 So these nations feared the LORD, and served their graven images, both
their children, and their children’s children: as did their fathers, so do
they to this day.
18:1 Now it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of
Israel, that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign.
2 Twenty and five years old was he when he began to reign; and he reigned
twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Abi, the
daughter of Zachariah.
3 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all
that David his father did.
4 He removed the high places, and broke the images, and cut down the groves,
and broke in pieces the brazen serpent that Moses had made: for to those
days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it
Nehushtan.
21:1 Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign, and reigned fifty
and five years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Hephzibah.
2 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, after the
abominations of the heathen, whom the LORD cast out before the children of
Israel.
3 For he built up again the high places which Hezekiah his father had
destroyed; and he reared up altars for Baal, and made a grove, as did Ahab
king of Israel; and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served them.
4 And he built altars in the house of the LORD, of which the LORD said, In
Jerusalem will I put my name.
5 And he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the
house of the LORD.
6 And he made his son pass through the fire, and observed times, and used
enchantments, and dealt with familiar spirits and wizards: he worked much
wickedness in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.
23:4 And the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, and the priests of the
second order, and the keepers of the door, to bring forth out of the temple
of the LORD all the vessels that were made for Baal, and for the grove, and
for all the host of heaven: and he burned them without Jerusalem in the
fields of Kidron, and carried the ashes of them to Bethel.
5 And he put down the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had
ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah, and in
the places round about Jerusalem; them also that burned incense to Baal, to
the sun, and to the moon, and to the planets, and to all the host of heaven.
6 And he brought out the grove from the house of the LORD, without
Jerusalem, to the brook Kidron, and burned it at the brook Kidron, and
stamped it small to powder, and cast the powder thereof on the graves of the
children of the people.
7 And he broke down the houses of the sodomites, that were by the house of
the LORD, where the women wove hangings for the grove.
8 And he brought all the priests out of the cities of Judah, and defiled the
high places where the priests had burned incense, from Geba to Beersheba,
and broke down the high places of the gates that were in the entering in of
the gate of Joshua the governor of the city, which were on a man’s left hand
at the gate of the city.
9 Nevertheless the priests of the high places came not up to the altar of
the LORD in Jerusalem, but they did eat of the unleavened bread among their
brothers.
10 And he defiled Topheth, which is in the valley of the children of Hinnom,
that no man might make his son or his daughter to pass through the fire to
Molech.
11 And he took away the horses that the kings of Judah had given to the sun,
at the entering in of the house of the LORD, by the chamber of Nathanmelech
the chamberlain, which was in the suburbs, and burned the chariots of the
sun with fire.
12 And the altars that were on the top of the upper chamber of Ahaz, which
the kings of Judah had made, and the altars which Manasseh had made in the
two courts of the house of the LORD, did the king beat down, and broke them
down from there, and cast the dust of them into the brook Kidron.
13 And the high places that were before Jerusalem, which were on the right
hand of the mount of corruption, which Solomon the king of Israel had built
for Ashtoreth the abomination of the Zidonians, and for Chemosh the
abomination of the Moabites, and for Milcom the abomination of the children
of Ammon, did the king defile.
14 And he broke in pieces the images, and cut down the groves, and filled
their places with the bones of men.
15 Moreover the altar that was at Bethel, and the high place which Jeroboam
the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin, had made, both that altar and the
high place he broke down, and burned the high place, and stamped it small to
powder, and burned the grove.
16 And as Josiah turned himself, he spied the sepulchers that were there in
the mount, and sent, and took the bones out of the sepulchers, and burned
them on the altar, and polluted it, according to the word of the LORD which
the man of God proclaimed, who proclaimed these words.
24 Moreover the workers with familiar spirits, and the wizards, and the
images, and the idols, and all the abominations that were spied in the land
of Judah and in Jerusalem, did Josiah put away, that he might perform the
words of the law which were written in the book that Hilkiah the priest

1 Ch 14:12 And when they had left their gods there, David gave a
commandment, and they were burned with fire.
2 Ch 11:13 And the priests and the Levites that were in all Israel
resorted to him out of all their coasts.
14 For the Levites left their suburbs and their possession, and came to
Judah and Jerusalem: for Jeroboam and his sons had cast them off from
executing the priest’s office to the LORD:
15 And he ordained him priests for the high places, and for the devils, and
for the calves which he had made.
13:8 And now you think to withstand the kingdom of the LORD in the hand of
the sons of David; and you be a great multitude, and there are with your
golden calves, which Jeroboam made you for gods.
9 Have you not cast out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the
Levites, and have made you priests after the manner of the nations of other
lands? so that whoever comes to consecrate himself with a young bullock and
seven rams, the same may be a priest of them that are no gods.
10 But as for us, the LORD is our God, and we have not forsaken him; and the
priests, which minister to the LORD, are the sons of Aaron, and the Levites
wait on their business:
33:1 Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign, and he reigned
fifty and five years in Jerusalem:
2 But did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, like to the
abominations of the heathen, whom the LORD had cast out before the children
of Israel.
3 For he built again the high places which Hezekiah his father had broken
down, and he reared up altars for Baalim, and made groves, and worshipped
all the host of heaven, and served them.
4 Also he built altars in the house of the LORD, whereof the LORD had said,
In Jerusalem shall my name be for ever.
5 And he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the
house of the LORD.
6 And he caused his children to pass through the fire in the valley of the
son of Hinnom: also he observed times, and used enchantments, and used
witchcraft, and dealt with a familiar spirit, and with wizards: he worked
much evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.
7 And he set a carved image, the idol which he had made, in the house of God,
of which God had said to David and to Solomon his son, In this house, and in
Jerusalem, which I have chosen before all the tribes of Israel, will I put
my name for ever:
33:9 So Manasseh made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to err, and to
do worse than the heathen, whom the LORD had destroyed before the children
of Israel.
12 And when he was in affliction, he sought the LORD his God, and humbled
himself greatly before the God of his fathers,
13 And prayed to him: and he was entreated of him, and heard his
supplication, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then
Manasseh knew that the LORD he was God.
15 And he took away the strange gods, and the idol out of the house of the
LORD, and all the altars that he had built in the mount of the house of the
LORD, and in Jerusalem, and cast them out of the city.
Ps 16:4 Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another
god: their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their
names into my lips.
97:7 Confounded be all they that serve graven images, that boast themselves
of idols: worship him, all you gods.
106:19 They made a calf in Horeb, and worshipped the molten image.
20 Thus they changed their glory into the similitude of an ox that eats
grass.
21 They forgot God their savior, which had done great things in Egypt;
37 Yes, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters to devils,
38 And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their
daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan: and the land was
polluted with blood.
115:3 But our God is in the heavens: he has done whatever he has pleased.

neither speak they through their throat.
8 They that make them are like to them; so is every one that trusts in them.
135:15 The idols of the heathen are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands.

Isa 2:8 Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of

a menstruous cloth; you shall say to it, Get you hence.
31:7 For in that day every man shall cast away his idols of silver, and his
idols of gold, which your own hands have made to you for a sin.
40:18 To whom then will you liken God? or what likeness will you compare to
him?
19 The workman melts a graven image, and the goldsmith spreads it over with
gold, and casts silver chains.
20 He that is so impoverished that he has no oblation chooses a tree that
will not rot; he seeks to him a cunning workman to prepare a graven image,
that shall not be moved.
21 Have you not known? have you not heard? has it not been told you from the
beginning? have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?
22 It is he that sits on the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants
thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretches out the heavens as a curtain,
and spreads them out as a tent to dwell in:
41:23 Show the things that are to come hereafter, that we may know that you
are gods: yes, do good, or do evil, that we may be dismayed, and behold it
together.
24 Behold, you are of nothing, and your work of nothing: an abomination is
he that chooses you.
42:8 I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another,
neither my praise to graven images.
42:17 They shall be turned back, they shall be greatly ashamed, that trust
in graven images, that say to the molten images, You are our gods.
44:9 They that make a graven image are all of them vanity; and their
delectable things shall not profit; and they are their own witnesses; they
see not, nor know; that they may be ashamed.
10 Who has formed a god, or molten a graven image that is profitable for
nothing?
11 Behold, all his fellows shall be ashamed: and the workmen, they are of
men: let them all be gathered together, let them stand up; yet they shall
fear, and they shall be ashamed together.
12 The smith with the tongs both works in the coals, and fashions it with
hammers, and works it with the strength of his arms: yes, he is hungry, and
his strength fails: he drinks no water, and is faint.
13 The carpenter stretches out his rule; he marks it out with a line; he
fits it with planes, and he marks it out with the compass, and makes it
after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man; that it may
remain in the house.
14 He hews him down cedars, and takes the cypress and the oak, which he
strengthens for himself among the trees of the forest: he plants an ash, and
the rain does nourish it.
15 Then shall it be for a man to burn: for he will take thereof, and warm
himself; yes, he kindles it, and bakes bread; yes, he makes a god, and
worships it; he makes it a graven image, and falls down thereto.
16 He burns part thereof in the fire; with part thereof he eats flesh; he
roasts roast, and is satisfied: yes, he warms himself, and said, Aha, I am
warm, I have seen the fire:
17 And the residue thereof he makes a god, even his graven image: he falls
down to it, and worships it, and prays to it, and said, Deliver me; for you
are my god.
18 They have not known nor understood: for he has shut their eyes, that they
cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot understand.
19 And none considers in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor
understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire; yes, also I have
baked bread on the coals thereof; I have roasted flesh, and eaten it: and
shall I make the residue thereof an abomination? shall I fall down to the
stock of a tree?
20 He feeds on ashes: a deceived heart has turned him aside, that he cannot
deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?
45:20 Assemble yourselves and come; draw near together, you that are escaped
of the nations: they have no knowledge that set up the wood of their graven
image, and pray to a god that cannot save.
46:4 And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry
you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.
5 To whom will you liken me, and make me equal, and compare me, that we may
be like?
6 They lavish gold out of the bag, and weigh silver in the balance, and hire
a goldsmith; and he makes it a god: they fall down, yes, they worship.
7 They bear him on the shoulder, they carry him, and set him in his place,
and he stands; from his place shall he not remove: yes, one shall cry to him,
yet can he not answer, nor save him out of his trouble.
Jer 2:5 Thus said the LORD, What iniquity have your fathers found in
me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are
become vain?
2:28 But where are your gods that you have made you? let them arise, if they
can save you in the time of your trouble: for according to the number of
your cities are your gods, O Judah.
10:3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cuts a tree out of the
forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the ax.
4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with
hammers, that it move not.
5 They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne,
because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil,
neither also is it in them to do good.
10:8 But they are altogether brutish and foolish: the stock is a doctrine of
vanities.
9 Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz,
the work of the workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and purple is
their clothing: they are all the work of cunning men.
10 But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting
king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be
able to abide his indignation.
11 Thus shall you say to them, The gods that have not made the heavens and
the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these
heavens.
14 Every man is brutish in his knowledge: every founder is confounded by the
graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in
them.
15 They are vanity, and the work of errors: in the time of their visitation
they shall perish.

Eze 28:1 The word of the LORD came again to me, saying,

set your heart as the heart of God:
3 Behold, you are wiser than Daniel; there is no secret that they can hide
from you:
Dan 3:1 Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height
was three score cubits, and the breadth thereof six cubits: he set it up in
the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon.
2 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king sent to gather together the princes, the
governors, and the captains, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellors,
the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, to come to the dedication
of the image which Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up.
3 Then the princes, the governors, and captains, the judges, the treasurers,
the counsellors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, were
gathered together to the dedication of the image that Nebuchadnezzar the
king had set up; and they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set
up.
4 Then an herald cried aloud, To you it is commanded, O people, nations, and
languages,
5 That at what time you hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut,
psaltery, dulcimer, and all kinds of music, you fall down and worship the
golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king has set up:
18 But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods,
nor worship the golden image which you have set up.

5:22 And you his son, O Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, though you

the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not,
nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand your breath is, and whose are
all your ways, have you not glorified:

king, and without a prince, and without a sacrifice, and without an image,
and without an ephod, and without teraphim:
8:4 They have set up kings, but not by me: they have made princes, and I
knew it not: of their silver and their gold have they made them idols, that
they may be cut off.
5 Your calf, O Samaria, has cast you off; my anger is kindled against them:
how long will it be ere they attain to innocence?
6 For from Israel was it also: the workman made it; therefore it is not God:
but the calf of Samaria shall be broken in pieces.
7 For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it has no
stalk; the bud shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the strangers shall
swallow it up.
Hab 2:8 What profits the graven image that the maker thereof has
graven it; the molten image, and a teacher of lies, that the maker of his
work trusts therein, to make dumb idols?
19 Woe to him that said to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it
shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver, and there is no
breath at all in the middle of it.
20 But the LORD is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before
him.
Zec 13:1 In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of
David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness.
2 And it shall come to pass in that day, said the LORD of hosts, that I will
cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be
remembered: and also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to
pass out of the land.
