ENVY
Mt 27:16 And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.
17 Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said to them, Whom
will you that I release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?
18 For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.
Lu 15:25 Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew
near to the house, he heard music and dancing.
26 And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant.
27 And he said to him, Your brother is come; and your father has killed the
fatted calf, because he has received him safe and sound.
28 And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and
entreated him.
29 And he answering said to his father, See, these many years do I serve you,
neither transgressed I at any time your commandment: and yet you never gave
me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends:
30 But as soon as this your son was come, which has devoured your living
with harlots, you have killed for him the fatted calf.
31 And he said to him, Son, you are ever with me, and all that I have is
yours.
32 It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this your brother
was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.
Acts 7:9 And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt:
but God was with him,
13:45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and
spoke against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and
blaspheming.
Rom 12:10 Be kindly affectionate one to another with brotherly love;
in honor preferring one another;
13:13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness,
not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
14 But put you on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the
flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof.
1 Cor 3:3 For you are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you
envying, and strife, and divisions, are you not carnal, and walk as men?
13:4 Charity suffers long, and is kind; charity envies not; charity braggs
not itself, is not puffed up,
Gal 5:26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another,
envying one another.
Php 1:15 Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some
also of good will:
2:3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of
mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
1 Tim 6:3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome
words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is
according to godliness;
4 He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of
words, whereof comes envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,
Tit 3:3 For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient,
deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy,
hateful, and hating one another.
1 Pe 2:1 Why laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies,
and envies, all evil speakings,
2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that you may grow
thereby:
Gen 4:4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstborn of his flock and
of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect to Abel and to his offering:
5 But to Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very
wroth, and his countenance fell.
26:12 Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an
hundred times: and the LORD blessed him.
13 And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very
great:
14 For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store
of servants: and the Philistines envied him.
15 For all the wells which his father’s servants had dig in the days of
Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them, and filled them with
earth.
16 And Abimelech said to Isaac, Go from us; for you are much mightier than
we.
17 And Isaac departed there, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar,
and dwelled there.
30:1 And when Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, Rachel envied her
sister; and said to Jacob, Give me children, or else I die.
37:1 And Jacob dwelled in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the
land of Canaan.
2 These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was
feeding the flock with his brothers; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah,
and with the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives: and Joseph brought to his
father their evil report.
3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son
of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colors.
4 And when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his
brothers, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably to him.
5 And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brothers: and they hated
him yet the more.
6 And he said to them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:
7 For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, see, my sheaf
arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about,
and made obeisance to my sheaf.
8 And his brothers said to him, Shall you indeed reign over us? or shall you
indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams,
and for his words.
9 And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brothers, and said,
Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and
the eleven stars made obeisance to me.
10 And he told it to his father, and to his brothers: and his father rebuked
him, and said to him, What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall I and
your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow down ourselves to you to
the earth?
11 And his brothers envied him; but his father observed the saying.
Num 11:27 And there ran a young man, and told Moses, and said, Eldad
and Medad do prophesy in the camp.
28 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Moses, one of his young men,
answered and said, My lord Moses, forbid them.
29 And Moses said to him, Envy you for my sake? would God that all the
LORD’s people were prophets, and that the LORD would put his spirit on them!
12:1 And Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman
whom he had married: for he had married an Ethiopian woman.
2 And they said, Has the LORD indeed spoken only by Moses? has he not spoken
also by us? And the LORD heard it.
3 (Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were on the face
of the earth.)
1 Sam 18:6 And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned
from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities
of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy,
and with instruments of music.
7 And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul has
slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.
8 And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They
have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but
thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom?
9 And Saul eyed David from that day and forward.
Ps 37:1 Fret not yourself because of evildoers, neither be you
envious against the workers of iniquity.
2 For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green
herb.
73:1 Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart.
2 But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well near slipped.
3 For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
4 For there are no bands in their death: but their strength is firm.
5 They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other
men.
16 When I thought to know this, it was too painful for me;
17 Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end.
106:16 They envied Moses also in the camp, and Aaron the saint of the LORD.
Pr 3:31 Envy you not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways.
32 For the fraudulent is abomination to the LORD: but his secret is with the
righteous.
23:17 Let not your heart envy sinners: but be you in the fear of the LORD
all the day long.
18 For surely there is an end; and your expectation shall not be cut off.
24:1 Be not you envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them.
24:19 Fret not yourself because of evil men, neither be you envious at the
wicked:
20 For there shall be no reward to the evil man; the candle of the wicked
shall be put out.
Ec 4:4 Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that
for this a man is envied of his neighbor. This is also vanity and vexation
of spirit.
Eze 31:3 Behold, the Assyrian was a cedar in Lebanon with fair
branches, and with a shadowing shroud, and of an high stature; and his top
was among the thick boughs.
8 The cedars in the garden of God could not hide him: the fir trees were not
like his boughs, and the chestnut trees were not like his branches; nor any
tree in the garden of God was like to him in his beauty.
9 I have made him fair by the multitude of his branches: so that all the
trees of Eden, that were in the garden of God, envied him.
