THE WIDOW, FATHERLESS AND STRANGERS
Mt 25:41 Then shall he say also to them on the left hand, Depart from
me, you cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
42 For I was an hungered, and you gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and you
gave me no drink:
43 I was a stranger, and you took me not in: naked, and you clothed me not:
sick, and in prison, and you visited me not.
44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we you an
hungered, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and
did not minister to you?
45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Truly I say to you, Inasmuch as you
did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.
Mr 12:19 Master, Moses wrote to us, If a man’s brother die, and leave
his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take his
wife, and raise up seed to his brother.
12:38 And he said to them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, which love
to go in long clothing, and love salutations in the marketplaces,
39 And the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at feasts:
40 Which devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers: these
shall receive greater damnation.
12:41 And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people
cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much.
42 And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which
make a farthing.
43 And he called to him his disciples, and said to them, Truly I say to you,
That this poor widow has cast more in, than all they which have cast into
the treasury:
44 For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast
in all that she had, even all her living.
Lu 2:36 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel,
of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband
seven years from her virginity;
37 And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not
from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.
Acts 6:1 And in those days, when the number of the disciples was
multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews,
because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration.
1 Cor 7:8 I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, It is good for
them if they abide even as I.
9 But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than
to burn.
Eph 2:19 Now therefore you are no more strangers and foreigners, but
fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
1 Tim 5:3 Honor widows that are widows indeed.
4 But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to show
piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable
before God.
5 Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusts in God, and continues
in supplications and prayers night and day.
6 But she that lives in pleasure is dead while she lives.
7 And these things give in charge, that they may be blameless.
8 But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own
house, he has denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.
9 Let not a widow be taken into the number under three score years old,
having been the wife of one man.
10 Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she
have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints’ feet, if she have
relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work.
11 But the younger widows refuse: for when they have begun to wax wanton
against Christ, they will marry;
12 Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith.
13 And with they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and
not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they
ought not.
14 I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the
house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.
15 For some are already turned aside after Satan.
16 If any man or woman that believes have widows, let them relieve them, and
let not the church be charged; that it may relieve them that are widows
indeed.
Heb 11:8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place
which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out,
not knowing where he went.
9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country,
dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same
promise:
11:13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having
seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and
confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
Jas 1:27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is
this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep
himself unspotted from the world.
1 Pe 1:1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers
scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
17 And if you call on the Father, who without respect of persons judges
according to every man’s work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:
Gen 23:3 And Abraham stood up from before his dead, and spoke to the
sons of Heth, saying,
4 I am a stranger and a sojourner with you: give me a possession of a burial
plot with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.
Ex 2:21 And Moses was content to dwell with the man: and he gave
Moses Zipporah his daughter.
22 And she bore him a son, and he called his name Gershom: for he said, I
have been a stranger in a strange land.
22:21 You shall neither vex a stranger, nor oppress him: for you were
strangers in the land of Egypt.
22 You shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child.
23 If you afflict them in any wise, and they cry at all to me, I will surely
hear their cry;
24 And my wrath shall wax hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your
wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.
23:9 Also you shall not oppress a stranger: for you know the heart of a
stranger, seeing you were strangers in the land of Egypt.
Lev 19:33 And if a stranger sojourn with you in your land, you shall
not vex him.
34 But the stranger that dwells with you shall be to you as one born among
you, and you shall love him as yourself; for you were strangers in the land
of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.
24:22 You shall have one manner of law, as well for the stranger, as for one
of your own country: for I am the LORD your God.
De 10:17 For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a
great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regards not persons, nor takes
reward:
18 He does execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow, and loves the
stranger, in giving him food and raiment.
19 Love you therefore the stranger: for you were strangers in the land of
Egypt.
14:29 And the Levite, (because he has no part nor inheritance with you,) and
the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, which are within your gates,
shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that the LORD your God may bless
you in all the work of your hand which you do.
24:17 You shall not pervert the judgment of the stranger, nor of the
fatherless; nor take a widow’s raiment to pledge:
24:19 When you cut down your harvest in your field, and have forgot a sheaf
in the field, you shall not go again to fetch it: it shall be for the
stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow: that the LORD your God may
bless you in all the work of your hands.
20 When you beat your olive tree, you shall not go over the boughs again: it
shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow.
21 When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, you shall not glean it
afterward: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the
widow.
22 And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt:
therefore I command you to do this thing.
27:19 Cursed be he that perverts the judgment of the stranger, fatherless,
and widow. And all the people shall say, Amen.
Job 24:3 They drive away the ass of the fatherless, they take the
widow’s ox for a pledge.
4 They turn the needy out of the way: the poor of the earth hide themselves
together.
29:12 Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him
that had none to help him.
13 The blessing of him that was ready to perish came on me: and I caused the
widow’s heart to sing for joy.
31:16 If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes
of the widow to fail;
17 Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless has not eaten
thereof;
18 (For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I
have guided her from my mother’s womb;)
31:31 If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we
cannot be satisfied.
32 The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the
travelers.
Ps 10:14 You have seen it; for you behold mischief and spite, to
requite it with your hand: the poor commits himself to you; you are the
helper of the fatherless.
17 LORD, you have heard the desire of the humble: you will prepare their
heart, you will cause your ear to hear:
18 To judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the earth may
no more oppress.
68:5 A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his
holy habitation.
6 God sets the solitary in families: he brings out those which are bound
with chains: but the rebellious dwell in a dry land.
82:1 God stands in the congregation of the mighty; he judges among the gods.
2 How long will you judge unjustly, and accept the persons of the wicked?
Selah.
3 Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy.
4 Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked.
94:6 They slay the widow and the stranger, and murder the fatherless.
7 Yet they say, The LORD shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob
regard it.
119:19 I am a stranger in the earth: hide not your commandments from me.
54 Your statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage.
146:9 The LORD preserves the strangers; he relieves the fatherless and widow:
but the way of the wicked he turns upside down.
Isa 1:17 Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed,
judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.
23 Your princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: every one loves
gifts, and follows after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither
does the cause of the widow come to them.
10:1 Woe to them that decree unrighteous decrees, and that write
grievousness which they have prescribed;
2 To turn aside the needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the
poor of my people, that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob the
fatherless!
3 And what will you do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which
shall come from far? to whom will you flee for help? and where will you
leave your glory?
14:1 For the LORD will have mercy on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and
set them in their own land: and the strangers shall be joined with them, and
they shall join to the house of Jacob.
Jer 5:27 As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of
deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich.
28 They are waxen fat, they shine: yes, they overpass the deeds of the
wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they
prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge.
29 Shall I not visit for these things? said the LORD: shall not my soul be
avenged on such a nation as this?
7:4 Trust you not in lying words, saying, The temple of the LORD, The temple
of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, are these.
5 For if you thoroughly amend your ways and your doings; if you thoroughly
execute judgment between a man and his neighbor;
6 If you oppress not the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed
not innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your hurt:
7 Then will I cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to
your fathers, for ever and ever.
22:3 Thus said the LORD; Execute you judgment and righteousness, and deliver
the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor: and do no wrong, do no
violence to the stranger, the fatherless, nor the widow, neither shed
innocent blood in this place.
4 For if you do this thing indeed, then shall there enter in by the gates of
this house kings sitting on the throne of David, riding in chariots and on
horses, he, and his servants, and his people.
5 But if you will not hear these words, I swear by myself, said the LORD,
that this house shall become a desolation.
49:11 Leave your fatherless children, I will preserve them alive; and let
your widows trust in me.
Eze 22:7 In you have they set light by father and mother: in the
middle of you have they dealt by oppression with the stranger: in you have
they vexed the fatherless and the widow.
22:29 The people of the land have used oppression, and exercised robbery,
and have vexed the poor and needy: yes, they have oppressed the stranger
wrongfully.
30 And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and
stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I
found none.
31 Therefore have I poured out my indignation on them; I have consumed them
with the fire of my wrath: their own way have I recompensed on their heads,
said the Lord GOD.
Hos 14:3 Asshur shall not save us; we will not ride on horses:
neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, You are our gods: for
in you the fatherless finds mercy.
Zec 7:8 And the word of the LORD came to Zechariah, saying,
9 Thus speaks the LORD of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and show
mercy and compassions every man to his brother:
10 And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor;
and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart.
Mal 3:5 And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a
swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against
false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages,
the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his
right, and fear not me, said the LORD of hosts.
