RELIGIOUSNESS DOES NOT HELP
Mt 3:7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his
baptism, he said to them, O generation of vipers, who has warned you to flee
from the wrath to come?
8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for
I say to you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children to
Abraham.
10 And now also the ax is laid to the root of the trees: therefore every
tree which brings not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
5:20 For I say to you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the
righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall in no case enter into
the kingdom of heaven.
6:1 Take heed that you do not your alms before men, to be seen of them:
otherwise you have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.
2 Therefore when you do your alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the
hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory
of men. Truly I say to you, They have their reward.
6:5 And when you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites are: for they love
to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that
they may be seen of men. Truly I say to you, They have their reward.
6 But you, when you pray, enter into your closet, and when you have shut
your door, pray to your Father which is in secret; and your Father which
sees in secret shall reward you openly.
7 But when you pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they
think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
8 Be not you therefore like to them: for your Father knows what things you
have need of, before you ask him.
6:16 Moreover when you fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance:
for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear to men to fast. Truly I
say to you, They have their reward.
6:22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore your eye be single, your
whole body shall be full of light.
23 But if your eye be evil, your whole body shall be full of darkness. If
therefore the light that is in you be darkness, how great is that darkness!
7:13 Enter you in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the
way, that leads to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leads to life,
and few there be that find it.
15:1 Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem,
saying,
2 Why do your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they
wash not their hands when they eat bread.
3 But he answered and said to them, Why do you also transgress the
commandment of God by your tradition?
6 And honor not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have you
made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.
7 You hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying,
8 This people draws near to me with their mouth, and honors me with their
lips; but their heart is far from me.
9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of
men.
23:1 Then spoke Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,
2 Saying The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat:
3 All therefore whatever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do
not you after their works: for they say, and do not.
23:4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on
men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their
fingers.
5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their
phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
6 And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the
synagogues,
7 And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
23:13 But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you shut up the
kingdom of heaven against men: for you neither go in yourselves, neither
suffer you them that are entering to go in.
15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you compass sea and
land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, you make him twofold more
the child of hell than yourselves.
23:23 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you pay tithe of
mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law,
judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought you to have done, and not to leave
the other undone.
24 You blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
25 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you make clean the
outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion
and excess.
26 You blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and
platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
27 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you are like to white
washed sepulchers, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within
full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.
28 Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but within you are
full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
23:29 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you build the
tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchers of the righteous,
30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have
been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
31 Why you be witnesses to yourselves, that you are the children of them
which killed the prophets.
32 Fill you up then the measure of your fathers.
33 You serpents, you generation of vipers, how can you escape the damnation
of hell?
Lu 7:29 And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God,
being baptized with the baptism of John.
30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against
themselves, being not baptized of him.
10:29 But he, willing to justify himself, said to Jesus, And who is my
neighbor?
16:14 And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and
they derided him.
15 And he said to them, You are they which justify yourselves before men;
but God knows your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is
abomination in the sight of God.
18:9 And he spoke this parable to certain which trusted in themselves that
they were righteous, and despised others:
10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the
other a publican.
11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank you, that I
am not as other men are, extortionists, unjust, adulterers, or even as this
publican.
12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.
13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his
eyes to heaven, but smote on his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a
sinner.
14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the
other: for every one that exalts himself shall be abased; and he that
humbles himself shall be exalted.
Acts 22:1 Men, brothers, and fathers, hear you my defense which I make now
to you.
2 (And when they heard that he spoke in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept
the more silence: and he said,)
3 I am truly a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet
brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the
perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as you
all are this day.
Rom 10:1 Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that
they might be saved.
2 For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to
knowledge.
3 For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to
establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves to the
righteousness of God.
4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that
believes.
Gal 1:13 For you have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews’
religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted
it:
14 And profited in the Jews’ religion above many my equals in my own nation,
being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers.
15 But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb, and
called me by his grace,
16 To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen;
immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood:
4:29 But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was
born after the Spirit, even so it is now.
Php 3:3 For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and
rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.
4 Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinks
that he has whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more:
5 Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of
Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee;
6 Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which
is in the law, blameless.
7 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.
2 Tim 3:5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from
such turn away.
Tit 1:16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being
abominable, and disobedient, and to every good work reprobate.
1 Joh 5:9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater:
for this is the witness of God which he has testified of his Son.
10 He that believes on the Son of God has the witness in himself: he that
believes not God has made him a liar; because he believes not the record
that God gave of his Son.
Rev 3:1 And to the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things said he
that has the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know your works,
that you have a name that you live, and are dead.
2 Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to
die: for I have not found your works perfect before God.
3:14 And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things
said the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation
of God;
15 I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot: I would you were
cold or hot.
16 So then because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew
you out of my mouth.
17 Because you say, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of
nothing; and know not that you are wretched, and miserable, and poor, and
blind, and naked:
18 I counsel you to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that you may be rich;
and white raiment, that you may be clothed, and that the shame of your
nakedness do not appear; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may
see.
19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and
open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
Pr 30:11 There is a generation that curses their father, and does not bless
their mother.
12 There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not
washed from their filthiness.
Isa 1:10 Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sodom; give ear to the law
of our God, you people of Gomorrah.
11 To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices to me? said the LORD:
I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I
delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats.
12 When you come to appear before me, who has required this at your hand, to
tread my courts?
13 Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination to me; the new
moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is
iniquity, even the solemn meeting.
14 Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hates: they are a
trouble to me; I am weary to bear them.
15 And when you spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you: yes,
when you make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.
16 Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before my
eyes; cease to do evil;
29:13 Why the Lord said, For as much as this people draw near me with their
mouth, and with their lips do honor me, but have removed their heart far
from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:
14 Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvelous work among this
people, even a marvelous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men
shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.
Jer 2:27 Saying to a stock, You are my father; and to a stone, You have
brought me forth: for they have turned their back to me, and not their face:
but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us.
7:8 Behold, you trust in lying words, that cannot profit.
9 Will you steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn
incense to Baal, and walk after other gods whom you know not;
10 And come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name,
and say, We are delivered to do all these abominations?
Am 5:21 I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your
solemn assemblies.
22 Though you offer me burnt offerings and your meat offerings, I will not
accept them: neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts.
23 Take you away from me the noise of your songs; for I will not hear the
melody of your viols.
