JUSTICE AND WICKEDNESS IN SOCIETY
Rom 13:3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil.
Will you then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and you
shall have praise of the same:
4 For he is the minister of God to you for good. But if you do that which is
evil, be afraid; for he bears not the sword in vain: for he is the minister
of God, a revenger to execute wrath on him that does evil.
2 Cor 13:1 This is the third time I am coming to you. In the mouth of
two or three witnesses shall every word be established.
Ex 21:12 He that smites a man, so that he die, shall be surely put to
death.
13 And if a man lie not in wait, but God deliver him into his hand; then I
will appoint you a place where he shall flee.
22:2 If a thief be found breaking up, and be smitten that he die, there
shall no blood be shed for him.
23:1 You shall not raise a false report: put not your hand with the wicked
to be an unrighteous witness.
2 You shall not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shall you speak in a
cause to decline after many to wrest judgment:
3 Neither shall you countenance a poor man in his cause.
23:6 You shall not wrest the judgment of your poor in his cause.
7 Keep you far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay you
not: for I will not justify the wicked.
8 And you shall take no gift: for the gift blinds the wise, and perverts the
words of the righteous.
Lev 19:15 You shall do no unrighteousness in judgment: you shall not
respect the person of the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty: but in
righteousness shall you judge your neighbor.
19:35 You shall do no unrighteousness in judgment, in length, in weight, or
in measure.
Num 35:9 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
10 Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them, When you be come over
Jordan into the land of Canaan;
11 Then you shall appoint you cities to be cities of refuge for you; that
the slayer may flee thither, which kills any person at unawares.
15 These six cities shall be a refuge, both for the children of Israel, and
for the stranger, and for the sojourner among them: that every one that
kills any person unawares may flee thither.
16 And if he smite him with an instrument of iron, so that he die, he is a
murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.
17 And if he smite him with throwing a stone, with which he may die, and he
die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.
22 But if he thrust him suddenly without enmity, or have cast on him any
thing without laying of wait,
De 1:15 So I took the chief of your tribes, wise men, and known, and
made them heads over you, captains over thousands, and captains over
hundreds, and captains over fifties, and captains over tens, and officers
among your tribes.
16 And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear the causes between
your brothers, and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and
the stranger that is with him.
17 You shall not respect persons in judgment; but you shall hear the small
as well as the great; you shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the
judgment is God’s: and the cause that is too hard for you, bring it to me,
and I will hear it.
16:18 Judges and officers shall you make you in all your gates, which the
LORD your God gives you, throughout your tribes: and they shall judge the
people with just judgment.
19 You shall not wrest judgment; you shall not respect persons, neither take
a gift: for a gift does blind the eyes of the wise, and pervert the words of
the righteous.
19:15 One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for
any sin, in any sin that he sins: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the
mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.
16 If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that
which is wrong;
17 Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before
the LORD, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days;
1 Sam 8:3 And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after
lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.
4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to
Samuel to Ramah,
5 And said to him, Behold, you are old, and your sons walk not in your ways:
now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.
6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge
us. And Samuel prayed to the LORD.
7 And the LORD said to Samuel, Listen to the voice of the people in all that
they say to you: for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me,
that I should not reign over them.
2 Sam 8:15 And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed
judgment and justice to all his people.
1 Ki 3:9 Give therefore your servant an understanding heart to judge
your people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to
judge this your so great a people?
2 Ch 19:6 And said to the judges, Take heed what you do: for you
judge not for man, but for the LORD, who is with you in the judgment.
7 Why now let the fear of the LORD be on you; take heed and do it: for there
is no iniquity with the LORD our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of
gifts.
Ezr 7:25 And you, Ezra, after the wisdom of your God, that is in your
hand, set magistrates and judges, which may judge all the people that are
beyond the river, all such as know the laws of your God; and teach you them
that know them not.
Job 34:17 Shall even he that hates right govern? and will you condemn
him that is most just?
34:30 That the hypocrite reign not, lest the people be ensnared.
Ps 2:10 Be wise now therefore, O you kings: be instructed, you judges
of the earth.
11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish from the way, when his
wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in
him.
21:7 For the king trusts in the LORD, and through the mercy of the most High
he shall not be moved.
94:20 Shall the throne of iniquity have fellowship with you, which frames
mischief by a law?
21 They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and
condemn the innocent blood.
99:4 The king’s strength also loves judgment; you do establish equity, you
execute judgment and righteousness in Jacob.
Pr 11:1 A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight
is his delight.
11:10 When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices: and when the
wicked perish, there is shouting.
12:17 He that speaks truth shows forth righteousness: but a false witness
deceit.
13:23 Much food is in the tillage of the poor: but there is that is
destroyed for want of judgment.
14:5 A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies.
14:28 In the multitude of people is the king’s honor: but in the want of
people is the destruction of the prince.
16:10 A divine sentence is in the lips of the king: his mouth transgresses
not in judgment.
11 A just weight and balance are the LORD’s: all the weights of the bag are
his work.
12 It is an abomination to kings to commit wickedness: for the throne is
established by righteousness.
13 Righteous lips are the delight of kings; and they love him that speaks
right.
14 The wrath of a king is as messengers of death: but a wise man will pacify
it.
15 In the light of the king’s countenance is life; and his favor is as a
cloud of the latter rain.
17:7 Excellent speech becomes not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.
17:15 He that justifies the wicked, and he that comdemns the just, even they
both are abomination to the LORD.
17:23 A wicked man takes a gift out of the bosom to pervert the ways of
judgment.
17:26 Also to punish the just is not good, nor to strike princes for equity.
18:5 It is not good to accept the person of the wicked, to overthrow the
righteous in judgment.
19:5 A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall
not escape.
9 A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall
perish.
19:12 The king’s wrath is as the roaring of a lion; but his favor is as dew
on the grass.
19:28 An ungodly witness scorns judgment: and the mouth of the wicked
devours iniquity.
20:8 A king that sits in the throne of judgment scatters away all evil with
his eyes.
20:10 Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike
abomination to the LORD.
23 Divers weights are an abomination to the LORD; and a false balance is not
good.
20:28 Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upheld by mercy.
21:7 The robbery of the wicked shall destroy them; because they refuse to do
judgment.
8 The way of man is fraudulent and strange: but as for the pure, his work is
right.
21:15 It is joy to the just to do judgment: but destruction shall be to the
workers of iniquity.
21:28 A false witness shall perish: but the man that hears speaks constantly.
22:22 Rob not the poor, because he is poor: neither oppress the afflicted in
the gate:
23 For the LORD will plead their cause, and spoil the soul of those that
spoiled them.
23:1 When you sit to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before
you:
2 And put a knife to your throat, if you be a man given to appetite.
3 Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.
24:23 These things also belong to the wise. It is not good to have respect
of persons in judgment.
24 He that said to the wicked, You are righteous; him shall the people curse,
nations shall abhor him:
25 But to them that rebuke him shall be delight, and a good blessing shall
come on them.
24:28 Be not a witness against your neighbor without cause; and deceive not
with your lips.
25:5 Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne shall be
established in righteousness.
25:15 By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaks the
bone.
25:18 A man that bears false witness against his neighbor is a maul, and a
sword, and a sharp arrow.
28:2 For the transgression of a land many are the princes thereof: but by a
man of understanding and knowledge the state thereof shall be prolonged.
28:12 When righteous men do rejoice, there is great glory: but when the
wicked rise, a man is hidden.
28 When the wicked rise, men hide themselves: but when they perish, the
righteous increase.
28:15 As a roaring lion, and a ranging bear; so is a wicked ruler over the
poor people.
16 The prince that wants understanding is also a great oppressor: but he
that hates covetousness shall prolong his days.
29:2 When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the
wicked bears rule, the people mourn.
29:4 The king by judgment establishes the land: but he that receives gifts
overthrows it.
29:12 If a ruler listen to lies, all his servants are wicked.
14 The king that faithfully judges the poor, his throne shall be established
for ever.
29:16 When the wicked are multiplied, transgression increases: but the
righteous shall see their fall.
29:26 Many seek the ruler’s favor; but every man’s judgment comes from the
LORD.
30:29 There be three things which go well, yes, four are comely in going:
30 A lion which is strongest among beasts, and turns not away for any;
31 A greyhound; an he goat also; and a king, against whom there is no rising
up.
31:1 The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him.
2 What, my son? and what, the son of my womb? and what, the son of my vows?
3 Give not your strength to women, nor your ways to that which destroys
kings.
4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for
princes strong drink:
5 Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of
the afflicted.
31:8 Open your mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed
to destruction.
9 Open your mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and
needy.
Ec 3:6 And moreover I saw under the sun the place of judgment, that
wickedness was there; and the place of righteousness, that iniquity was
there.
4:13 Better is a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king, who
will no more be admonished.
5:8 If you see the oppression of the poor, and violent perverting of
judgment and justice in a province, marvel not at the matter: for he that is
higher than the highest regards; and there be higher than they.
10:4 If the spirit of the ruler rise up against you, leave not your place;
for yielding pacifies great offenses.
5 There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, as an error which
proceeds from the ruler:
6 Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place.
7 I have seen servants on horses, and princes walking as servants on the
earth.
10:16 Woe to you, O land, when your king is a child, and your princes eat in
the morning!
17 Blessed are you, O land, when your king is the son of nobles, and your
princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!
Isa 1:17 Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed,
judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.
1:23 Your princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: every one loves
gifts, and follows after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither
does the cause of the widow come to them.
3:12 As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over
them. O my people, they which lead you cause you to err, and destroy the way
of your paths.
5:7 For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the
men of Judah his pleasant plant: and he looked for judgment, but behold
oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry.
5:22 Woe to them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to
mingle strong drink:
23 Which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of
the righteous from him!
9:16 For the leaders of this people cause them to err; and they that are led
of them are destroyed.
10:1 Woe to them that decree unrighteous decrees, and that write
grievousness which they have prescribed;
2 To turn aside the needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the
poor of my people, that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob the
fatherless!
3 And what will you do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which
shall come from far? to whom will you flee for help? and where will you
leave your glory?
59:14 And judgment is turned away backward, and justice stands afar off: for
truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter.
15 Yes, truth fails; and he that departs from evil makes himself a prey: and
the LORD saw it, and it displeased him that there was no judgment.
61:8 For I the LORD love judgment, I hate robbery for burnt offering; and I
will direct their work in truth, and I will make an everlasting covenant
with them.
Jer 7:4 Trust you not in lying words, saying, The temple of the LORD,
The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, are these.
5 For if you thoroughly amend your ways and your doings; if you thoroughly
execute judgment between a man and his neighbor;
6 If you oppress not the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed
not innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your hurt:
7 Then will I cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to
your fathers, for ever and ever.
21:12 O house of David, thus said the LORD; Execute judgment in the morning,
and deliver him that is spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor, lest my
fury go out like fire, and burn that none can quench it, because of the evil
of your doings.
22:15 Shall you reign, because you close yourself in cedar? did not your
father eat and drink, and do judgment and justice, and then it was well with
him?
16 He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then it was well with him: was
not this to know me? said the LORD.
Lam 3:35 To turn aside the right of a man before the face of the most
High,
36 To subvert a man in his cause, the LORD approves not.
Eze 9:9 Then said he to me, The iniquity of the house of Israel and
Judah is exceeding great, and the land is full of blood, and the city full
of perverseness: for they say, The LORD has forsaken the earth, and the LORD
sees not.
Am 5:10 They hate him that rebukes in the gate, and they abhor him
that speaks uprightly.
11 For as much therefore as your treading is on the poor, and you take from
him burdens of wheat: you have built houses of hewn stone, but you shall not
dwell in them; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink
wine of them.
12 For I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins: they
afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the
gate from their right.
13 Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in that time; for it is an evil
time.
14 Seek good, and not evil, that you may live: and so the LORD, the God of
hosts, shall be with you, as you have spoken.
15 Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it
may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.
24 But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.
Hab 1:1 The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see.
2 O LORD, how long shall I cry, and you will not hear! even cry out to you
of violence, and you will not save!
3 Why do you show me iniquity, and cause me to behold grievance? for
spoiling and violence are before me: and there are that raise up strife and
contention.
4 Therefore the law is slacked, and judgment does never go forth: for the
wicked does compass about the righteous; therefore wrong judgment proceeds.
