THE DEBT OF SIN
Mt 12:43 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walks
through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none.
44 Then he said, I will return into my house from where I came out; and when
he is come, he finds it empty, swept, and garnished.
45 Then goes he, and takes with himself seven other spirits more wicked than
himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man
is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also to this wicked generation.
23:34 Why, behold, I send to you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and
some of them you shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall you whip in
your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:
35 That on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the
blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom you
slew between the temple and the altar.
36 Truly I say to you, All these things shall come on this generation.
37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you that kill the prophets, and stone them which
are sent to you, how often would I have gathered your children together,
even as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings, and you would not!
38 Behold, your house is left to you desolate.
39 For I say to you, You shall not see me from now on, till you shall say,
Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord.
Lu 19:41 And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over
it,
42 Saying, If you had known, even you, at least in this your day, the things
which belong to your peace! but now they are hid from your eyes.
43 For the days shall come on you, that your enemies shall cast a trench
about you, and compass you round, and keep you in on every side,
44 And shall lay you even with the ground, and your children within you; and
they shall not leave in you one stone on another; because you knew not the
time of your visitation.
1 Cor 10:11 Now all these things happened to them for ensamples: and
they are written for our admonition, on whom the ends of the world are come.
1 Th 2:14 For you, brothers, became followers of the churches of God
which in Judaea are in Christ Jesus: for you also have suffered like things
of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews:
15 Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have
persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men:
16 Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill
up their sins always: for the wrath is come on them to the uttermost.
2 Pe 2:4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them
down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved to
judgment;
5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher
of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly;
6 And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them
with an overthrow, making them an ensample to those that after should live
ungodly;
Jude 1:5 I will therefore put you in remembrance, though you once
knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of
Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not.
6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own
habitation, he has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness to the
judgment of the great day.
7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner,
giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are
set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
Rev 18:1 And after these things I saw another angel come down from
heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.
2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is
fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of
every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.
3 For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication,
and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the
merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her
delicacies.
4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people,
that you be not partakers of her sins, and that you receive not of her
plagues.
5 For her sins have reached to heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities.
6 Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double to her double according to
her works: in the cup which she has filled fill to her double.
7 How much she has glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment
and sorrow give her: for she said in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no
widow, and shall see no sorrow.
8 Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and
famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord
God who judges her.
9 And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived
deliciously with her, shall mourn her, and lament for her, when they shall
see the smoke of her burning,
10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that
great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is your judgment come.
19:1 And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven,
saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honor, and power, to the Lord
our God:
2 For true and righteous are his judgments: for he has judged the great
whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and has avenged the
blood of his servants at her hand.
Gen 6:5 And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth,
and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil
continually.
6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved
him at his heart.
7 And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of
the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the
air; for it repents me that I have made them.
8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.
9 These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his
generations, and Noah walked with God.
10 And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with
violence.
12 And God looked on the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh
had corrupted his way on the earth.
13 And God said to Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the
earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them
with the earth.
13:12 Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of
the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.
13 But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.
15:16 But in the fourth generation they shall come here again: for the
iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.
18:20 And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and
because their sin is very grievous;
18:22 And the men turned their faces from there, and went toward Sodom: but
Abraham stood yet before the LORD.
23 And Abraham drew near, and said, Will you also destroy the righteous with
the wicked?
24 Peradventure there be fifty righteous within the city: will you also
destroy and not spare the place for the fifty righteous that are therein?
25 That be far from you to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with
the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from
you: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?
26 And the LORD said, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city,
then I will spare all the place for their sakes.
27 And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken on me to speak to
the LORD, which am but dust and ashes:
28 Peradventure there shall lack five of the fifty righteous: will you
destroy all the city for lack of five? And he said, If I find there forty
and five, I will not destroy it.
29 And he spoke to him yet again, and said, Peradventure there shall be
forty found there. And he said, I will not do it for forty’s sake.
30 And he said to him, Oh let not the LORD be angry, and I will speak:
Peradventure there shall thirty be found there. And he said, I will not do
it, if I find thirty there.
31 And he said, Behold now, I have taken on me to speak to the LORD:
Peradventure there shall be twenty found there. And he said, I will not
destroy it for twenty’s sake.
32 And he said, Oh let not the LORD be angry, and I will speak yet but this
once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy
it for ten’s sake.
33 And the LORD went his way, as soon as he had left communing with Abraham:
and Abraham returned to his place.
19:12 And the men said to Lot, Have you here any besides? son in law, and
your sons, and your daughters, and whatever you have in the city, bring them
out of this place:
13 For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great
before the face of the LORD; and the LORD has sent us to destroy it.
14 And Lot went out, and spoke to his sons in law, which married his
daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will
destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked to his sons in law.
15 And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise,
take your wife, and your two daughters, which are here; lest you be consumed
in the iniquity of the city.
16 And while he lingered, the men laid hold on his hand, and on the hand of
his wife, and on the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful to
him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.
22 Haste you, escape thither; for I cannot do anything till you be come
thither. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.
23 The sun was risen on the earth when Lot entered into Zoar.
24 Then the LORD rained on Sodom and on Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the
LORD out of heaven;
25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants
of the cities, and that which grew on the ground.
26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.
Ex 20:5 You shall not bow down yourself to them, nor serve them: for
I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers
on the children to the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
6 And showing mercy to thousands of them that love me, and keep my
commandments.
Lev 10:17 Why have you not eaten the sin offering in the holy place,
seeing it is most holy, and God has given it you to bear the iniquity of the
congregation, to make atonement for them before the LORD?
18:24 Defile not you yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the
nations are defiled which I cast out before you:
25 And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof on it,
and the land itself vomits out her inhabitants.
26 You shall therefore keep my statutes and my judgments, and shall not
commit any of these abominations; neither any of your own nation, nor any
stranger that sojournes among you:
27 (For all these abominations have the men of the land done, which were
before you, and the land is defiled;)
28 That the land spew not you out also, when you defile it, as it spewed out
the nations that were before you.
26:14 But if you will not listen to me, and will not do all these
commandments;
15 And if you shall despise my statutes, or if your soul abhor my judgments,
so that you will not do all my commandments, but that you break my covenant:
16 I also will do this to you; I will even appoint over you terror,
consumption, and the burning ague, that shall consume the eyes, and cause
sorrow of heart: and you shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall
eat it.
17 And I will set my face against you, and you shall be slain before your
enemies: they that hate you shall reign over you; and you shall flee when
none pursues you.
39 And they that are left of you shall pine away in their iniquity in your
enemies’ lands; and also in the iniquities of their fathers shall they pine
away with them.
40 If they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers,
with their trespass which they trespassed against me, and that also they
have walked contrary to me;
Num 14:9 Only rebel not you against the LORD, neither fear you the
people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defense is departed
from them, and the LORD is with us: fear them not.
De 8:19 And it shall be, if you do at all forget the LORD your God,
and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify
against you this day that you shall surely perish.
20 As the nations which the LORD destroys before your face, so shall you
perish; because you would not be obedient to the voice of the LORD your God.
9:4 Speak not you in your heart, after that the LORD your God has cast them
out from before you, saying, For my righteousness the LORD has brought me in
to possess this land: but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD does
drive them out from before you.
5 Not for your righteousness, or for the uprightness of your heart, do you
go to possess their land: but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD
your God does drive them out from before you, and that he may perform the
word which the LORD swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
12:31 You shall not do so to the LORD your God: for every abomination to the
LORD, which he hates, have they done to their gods; for even their sons and
their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods.
24:16 The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall
the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to
death for his own sin.
2 Sam 21:1 Then there was a famine in the days of David three years,
year after year; and David inquired of the LORD. And the LORD answered, It
is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites.
2 And the king called the Gibeonites, and said to them; (now the Gibeonites
were not of the children of Israel, but of the remnant of the Amorites; and
the children of Israel had sworn to them: and Saul sought to slay them in
his zeal to the children of Israel and Judah.)
3 Why David said to the Gibeonites, What shall I do for you? and with which
shall I make the atonement, that you may bless the inheritance of the LORD?
4 And the Gibeonites said to him, We will have no silver nor gold of Saul,
nor of his house; neither for us shall you kill any man in Israel. And he
said, What you shall say, that will I do for you.
5 And they answered the king, The man that consumed us, and that devised
against us that we should be destroyed from remaining in any of the coasts
of Israel,
6 Let seven men of his sons be delivered to us, and we will hang them up to
the LORD in Gibeah of Saul, whom the LORD did choose. And the king said, I
will give them.
13 And he brought up from there the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan
his son; and they gathered the bones of them that were hanged.
14 And the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son buried they in the country of
Benjamin in Zelah, in the sepulcher of Kish his father: and they performed
all that the king commanded. And after that God was entreated for the land.
2 Ki 17:13 Yet the LORD testified against Israel, and against Judah,
by all the prophets, and by all the seers, saying, Turn you from your evil
ways, and keep my commandments and my statutes, according to all the law
which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by my servants the
prophets.
14 Notwithstanding they would not hear, but hardened their necks, like to
the neck of their fathers, that did not believe in the LORD their God.
15 And they rejected his statutes, and his covenant that he made with their
fathers, and his testimonies which he testified against them; and they
followed vanity, and became vain, and went after the heathen that were round
about them, concerning whom the LORD had charged them, that they should not
do like them.
16 And they left all the commandments of the LORD their God, and made them
molten images, even two calves, and made a grove, and worshipped all the
host of heaven, and served Baal.
17 And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire,
and used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the
sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.
18 Therefore the LORD was very angry with Israel, and removed them out of
his sight: there was none left but the tribe of Judah only.
19 Also Judah kept not the commandments of the LORD their God, but walked in
the statutes of Israel which they made.
20 And the LORD rejected all the seed of Israel, and afflicted them, and
delivered them into the hand of spoilers, until he had cast them out of his
sight.
21 For he rent Israel from the house of David; and they made Jeroboam the
son of Nebat king: and Jeroboam drove Israel from following the LORD, and
made them sin a great sin.
22 For the children of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he
did; they departed not from them;
23 Until the LORD removed Israel out of his sight, as he had said by all his
servants the prophets. So was Israel carried away out of their own land to
Assyria to this day.
19:25 Have you not heard long ago how I have done it, and of ancient times
that I have formed it? now have I brought it to pass, that you should be to
lay waste fenced cities into ruinous heaps.
26 Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and
confounded; they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as
the grass on the house tops, and as corn blasted before it be grown up.
2 Ch 28:3 Moreover he burnt incense in the valley of the son of
Hinnom, and burnt his children in the fire, after the abominations of the
heathen whom the LORD had cast out before the children of Israel.
36:14 Moreover all the chief of the priests, and the people, transgressed
very much after all the abominations of the heathen; and polluted the house
of the LORD which he had hallowed in Jerusalem.
15 And the LORD God of their fathers sent to them by his messengers, rising
up betimes, and sending; because he had compassion on his people, and on his
dwelling place:
16 But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and
misused his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people,
till there was no remedy.
17 Therefore he brought on them the king of the Chaldees, who slew their
young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no
compassion on young man or maiden, old man, or him that stooped for age: he
gave them all into his hand.
18 And all the vessels of the house of God, great and small, and the
treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king, and of
his princes; all these he brought to Babylon.
19 And they burnt the house of God, and broke down the wall of Jerusalem,
and burnt all the palaces thereof with fire, and destroyed all the goodly
vessels thereof.
20 And them that had escaped from the sword carried he away to Babylon;
where they were servants to him and his sons until the reign of the kingdom
of Persia:
21 To fulfill the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land
had enjoyed her sabbaths: for as long as she lay desolate she kept sabbath,
to fulfill three score and ten years.
Job 12:23 He increases the nations, and destroys them: he enlarges
the nations, and straitens them again.
Ps 7:11 God judges the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked
every day.
12 If he turn not, he will whet his sword; he has bent his bow, and made it
ready.
18:27 For you will save the afflicted people; but will bring down high looks.
25:11 For your name’s sake, O LORD, pardon my iniquity; for it is great.
32:5 I acknowledge my sin to you, and my iniquity have I not hid. I said, I
will confess my transgressions to the LORD; and you forgave the iniquity of
my sin. Selah.
34:16 The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the
remembrance of them from the earth.
37:28 For the LORD loves judgment, and forsakes not his saints; they are
preserved for ever: but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off.
29 The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein for ever.
68:30 Rebuke the company of spearmen, the multitude of the bulls, with the
calves of the people, till every one submit himself with pieces of silver:
scatter you the people that delight in war.
106:37 Yes, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters to devils,
38 And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their
daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan: and the land was
polluted with blood.
39 Thus were they defiled with their own works, and went a whoring with
their own inventions.
40 Therefore was the wrath of the LORD kindled against his people, so that
he abhorred his own inheritance.
41 And he gave them into the hand of the heathen; and they that hated them
ruled over them.
107:33 He turns rivers into a wilderness, and the springs into dry ground;
34 A fruitful land into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell
therein.
Pr 1:23 Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit to
you, I will make known my words to you.
24 Because I have called, and you refused; I have stretched out my hand, and
no man regarded;
25 But you have set at nothing all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:
26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear comes;
27 When your fear comes as desolation, and your destruction comes as a
whirlwind; when distress and anguish comes on you.
28 Then shall they call on me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me
early, but they shall not find me:
29 For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:
30 They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.
31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled
with their own devices.
10:30 The righteous shall never be removed: but the wicked shall not inhabit
the earth.
11:11 By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted: but it is
overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.
14:34 Righteousness exalts a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.
16:4 The LORD has made all things for himself: yes, even the wicked for the
day of evil.
5 Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: though
hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished.
Ec 8:11 Because sentence against an evil work is not executed
speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do
evil.
Isa 1:19 If you be willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of
the land:
20 But if you refuse and rebel, you shall be devoured with the sword: for
the mouth of the LORD has spoken it.
21 How is the faithful city become an harlot! it was full of judgment;
righteousness lodged in it; but now murderers.
22 Your silver is become dross, your wine mixed with water:
23 Your princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: every one loves
gifts, and follows after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither
does the cause of the widow come to them.
24 Therefore said the LORD, the LORD of hosts, the mighty One of Israel, Ah,
I will ease me of my adversaries, and avenge me of my enemies:
25 And I will turn my hand on you, and purely purge away your dross, and
take away all your tin:
26 And I will restore your judges as at the first, and your counsellors as
at the beginning: afterward you shall be called, The city of righteousness,
the faithful city.
3:1 For, behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, does take away from Jerusalem
and from Judah the stay and the staff, the whole stay of bread, and the
whole stay of water.
2 The mighty man, and the man of war, the judge, and the prophet, and the
prudent, and the ancient,
3 The captain of fifty, and the honorable man, and the counselor, and the
cunning artificer, and the eloquent orator.
4 And I will give children to be their princes, and babes shall rule over
them.
5 And the people shall be oppressed, every one by another, and every one by
his neighbor: the child shall behave himself proudly against the ancient,
and the base against the honorable.
3:8 For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen: because their tongue and
their doings are against the LORD, to provoke the eyes of his glory.
9 The show of their countenance does witness against them; and they declare
their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe to their soul! for they have
rewarded evil to themselves.
10 Say you to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall
eat the fruit of their doings.
11 Woe to the wicked! it shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands
shall be given him.
12 As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them.
O my people, they which lead you cause you to err, and destroy the way of
your paths.
13 The LORD stands up to plead, and stands to judge the people.
10:5 O Assyrian, the rod of my anger, and the staff in their hand is my
indignation.
6 I will send him against an hypocritical nation, and against the people of
my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey,
and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.
7 However, he means not so, neither does his heart think so; but it is in
his heart to destroy and cut off nations not a few.
8 For he said, Are not my princes altogether kings?
9 Is not Calno as Carchemish? is not Hamath as Arpad? is not Samaria as
Damascus?
10 As my hand has found the kingdoms of the idols, and whose graven images
did excel them of Jerusalem and of Samaria;
11 Shall I not, as I have done to Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem
and her idols?
12 Why it shall come to pass, that when the Lord has performed his whole
work on mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the stout
heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks.
13:9 Behold, the day of the LORD comes, cruel both with wrath and fierce
anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof
out of it.
10 For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give
their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon
shall not cause her light to shine.
11 And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their
iniquity; and I will cause the arrogance of the proud to cease, and will lay
low the haughtiness of the terrible.
12 I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the
golden wedge of Ophir.
13 Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her
place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger.
13:19 And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees’
excellency, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.
20 It shall never be inhabited, neither shall it be dwelled in from
generation to generation: neither shall the Arabian pitch tent there;
neither shall the shepherds make their fold there.
21 But wild beasts of the desert shall lie there; and their houses shall be
full of doleful creatures; and owls shall dwell there, and satyrs shall
dance there.
22 And the wild beasts of the islands shall cry in their desolate houses,
and dragons in their pleasant palaces: and her time is near to come, and her
days shall not be prolonged.
26:9 With my soul have I desired you in the night; yes, with my spirit
within me will I seek you early: for when your judgments are in the earth,
the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.
10 Let favor be showed to the wicked, yet will he not learn righteousness:
in the land of uprightness will he deal unjustly, and will not behold the
majesty of the LORD.
26:20 Come, my people, enter you into your chambers, and shut your doors
about you: hide yourself as it were for a little moment, until the
indignation be over.
21 For, behold, the LORD comes out of his place to punish the inhabitants of
the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and
shall no more cover her slain.
37:26 Have you not heard long ago, how I have done it; and of ancient times,
that I have formed it? now have I brought it to pass, that you should be to
lay waste defended cities into ruinous heaps.
27 Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and
confounded: they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as
the grass on the housetops, and as corn blasted before it be grown up.
53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own
way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
65:6 Behold, it is written before me: I will not keep silence, but will
recompense, even recompense into their bosom,
7 Your iniquities, and the iniquities of your fathers together, said the
LORD, which have burned incense on the mountains, and blasphemed me on the
hills: therefore will I measure their former work into their bosom.
Jer 5:1 Run you to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see
now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if you can find a man,
if there be any that executes judgment, that seeks the truth; and I will
pardon it.
5:12 They have belied the LORD, and said, It is not he; neither shall evil
come on us; neither shall we see sword nor famine:
7:3 Thus said the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, Amend your ways and your
doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place.
4 Trust you not in lying words, saying, The temple of the LORD, The temple
of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, are these.
5 For if you thoroughly amend your ways and your doings; if you thoroughly
execute judgment between a man and his neighbor;
6 If you oppress not the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed
not innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your hurt:
7 Then will I cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to
your fathers, for ever and ever.
8 Behold, you trust in lying words, that cannot profit.
9 Will you steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn
incense to Baal, and walk after other gods whom you know not;
10 And come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name,
and say, We are delivered to do all these abominations?
11 Is this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in
your eyes? Behold, even I have seen it, said the LORD.
12 But go you now to my place which was in Shiloh, where I set my name at
the first, and see what I did to it for the wickedness of my people Israel.
13 And now, because you have done all these works, said the LORD, and I
spoke to you, rising up early and speaking, but you heard not; and I called
you, but you answered not;
14 Therefore will I do to this house, which is called by my name, wherein
you trust, and to the place which I gave to you and to your fathers, as I
have done to Shiloh.
15 And I will cast you out of my sight, as I have cast out all your brothers,
even the whole seed of Ephraim.
16 Therefore pray not you for this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer
for them, neither make intercession to me: for I will not hear you.
7:24 But they listened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in the
counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and
not forward.
25 Since the day that your fathers came forth out of the land of Egypt to
this day I have even sent to you all my servants the prophets, daily rising
up early and sending them:
26 Yet they listened not to me, nor inclined their ear, but hardened their
neck: they did worse than their fathers.
27 Therefore you shall speak all these words to them; but they will not
listen to you: you shall also call to them; but they will not answer you.
28 But you shall say to them, This is a nation that obeys not the voice of
the LORD their God, nor receives correction: truth is perished, and is cut
off from their mouth.
29 Cut off your hair, O Jerusalem, and cast it away, and take up a
lamentation on high places; for the LORD has rejected and forsaken the
generation of his wrath.
30 For the children of Judah have done evil in my sight, said the LORD: they
have set their abominations in the house which is called by my name, to
pollute it.
31 And they have built the high places of Tophet, which is in the valley of
the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which
I commanded them not, neither came it into my heart.
11:6 Then the LORD said to me, Proclaim all these words in the cities of
Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, saying, Hear you the words of this
covenant, and do them.
7 For I earnestly protested to your fathers in the day that I brought them
up out of the land of Egypt, even to this day, rising early and protesting,
saying, Obey my voice.
8 Yet they obeyed not, nor inclined their ear, but walked every one in the
imagination of their evil heart: therefore I will bring on them all the
words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do: but they did them not.
14:16 And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets
of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword; and they shall have none
to bury them, them, their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters: for I
will pour their wickedness on them.
15:1 Then said the LORD to me, Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet
my mind could not be toward this people: cast them out of my sight, and let
them go forth.
2 And it shall come to pass, if they say to you, Where shall we go forth?
then you shall tell them, Thus said the LORD; Such as are for death, to
death; and such as are for the sword, to the sword; and such as are for the
famine, to the famine; and such as are for the captivity, to the captivity.
3 And I will appoint over them four kinds, said the LORD: the sword to slay,
and the dogs to tear, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the
earth, to devour and destroy.
4 And I will cause them to be removed into all kingdoms of the earth,
because of Manasseh the son of Hezekiah king of Judah, for that which he did
in Jerusalem.
16:12 And you have done worse than your fathers; for, behold, you walk every
one after the imagination of his evil heart, that they may not listen to me:
13 Therefore will I cast you out of this land into a land that you know not,
neither you nor your fathers; and there shall you serve other gods day and
night; where I will not show you favor.
18:5 Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
6 O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? said the LORD.
Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, O house
of Israel.
7 At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a
kingdom, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy it;
8 If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I
will repent of the evil that I thought to do to them.
9 And at what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a
kingdom, to build and to plant it;
10 If it do evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will repent
of the good, with which I said I would benefit them.
11 Now therefore go to, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of
Jerusalem, saying, Thus said the LORD; Behold, I frame evil against you, and
devise a device against you: return you now every one from his evil way, and
make your ways and your doings good.
12 And they said, There is no hope: but we will walk after our own devices,
and we will every one do the imagination of his evil heart.
26:12 Then spoke Jeremiah to all the princes and to all the people, saying,
The LORD sent me to prophesy against this house and against this city all
the words that you have heard.
13 Therefore now amend your ways and your doings, and obey the voice of the
LORD your God; and the LORD will repent him of the evil that he has
pronounced against you.
27:4 And command them to say to their masters, Thus said the LORD of hosts,
the God of Israel; Thus shall you say to your masters;
5 I have made the earth, the man and the beast that are on the ground, by my
great power and by my outstretched arm, and have given it to whom it seemed
meet to me.
6 And now have I given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the
king of Babylon, my servant; and the beasts of the field have I given him
also to serve him.
7 And all nations shall serve him, and his son, and his son’s son, until the
very time of his land come: and then many nations and great kings shall
serve themselves of him.
8 And it shall come to pass, that the nation and kingdom which will not
serve the same Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, and that will not put
their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, that nation will I punish,
said the LORD, with the sword, and with the famine, and with the pestilence,
until I have consumed them by his hand.
31:29 In those days they shall say no more, The fathers have eaten a sour
grape, and the children’s teeth are set on edge.
30 But every one shall die for his own iniquity: every man that eats the
sour grape, his teeth shall be set on edge.
51:5 For Israel has not been forsaken, nor Judah of his God, of the LORD of
hosts; though their land was filled with sin against the Holy One of Israel.
Lam 4:6 For the punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of my
people is greater than the punishment of the sin of Sodom, that was
overthrown as in a moment, and no hands stayed on her.
5:7 Our fathers have sinned, and are not; and we have borne their iniquities.
Eze 4:4 Lie you also on your left side, and lay the iniquity of the
house of Israel on it: according to the number of the days that you shall
lie on it you shall bear their iniquity.
5 For I have laid on you the years of their iniquity, according to the
number of the days, three hundred and ninety days: so shall you bear the
iniquity of the house of Israel.
6 And when you have accomplished them, lie again on your right side, and you
shall bear the iniquity of the house of Judah forty days: I have appointed
you each day for a year.
4:16 Moreover he said to me, Son of man, behold, I will break the staff of
bread in Jerusalem: and they shall eat bread by weight, and with care; and
they shall drink water by measure, and with astonishment:
17 That they may want bread and water, and be astonished one with another,
and consume away for their iniquity.
9:9 Then said he to me, The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is
exceeding great, and the land is full of blood, and the city full of
perverseness: for they say, The LORD has forsaken the earth, and the LORD
sees not.
10 And as for me also, my eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity, but
I will recompense their way on their head.
12:17 Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
18 Son of man, eat your bread with quaking, and drink your water with
trembling and with carefulness;
19 And say to the people of the land, Thus said the Lord GOD of the
inhabitants of Jerusalem, and of the land of Israel; They shall eat their
bread with carefulness, and drink their water with astonishment, that her
land may be desolate from all that is therein, because of the violence of
all them that dwell therein.
20 And the cities that are inhabited shall be laid waste, and the land shall
be desolate; and you shall know that I am the LORD.
21 And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
22 Son of man, what is that proverb that you have in the land of Israel,
saying, The days are prolonged, and every vision fails?
23 Tell them therefore, Thus said the Lord GOD; I will make this proverb to
cease, and they shall no more use it as a proverb in Israel; but say to them,
The days are at hand, and the effect of every vision.
24 For there shall be no more any vain vision nor flattering divination
within the house of Israel.
25 For I am the LORD: I will speak, and the word that I shall speak shall
come to pass; it shall be no more prolonged: for in your days, O rebellious
house, will I say the word, and will perform it, said the Lord GOD.
26 Again the word of the LORD came to me, saying.
27 Son of man, behold, they of the house of Israel say, The vision that he
sees is for many days to come, and he prophesies of the times that are far
off.
28 Therefore say to them, Thus said the Lord GOD; There shall none of my
words be prolonged any more, but the word which I have spoken shall be done,
said the Lord GOD.
14:12 The word of the LORD came again to me, saying,
13 Son of man, when the land sins against me by trespassing grievously, then
will I stretch out my hand on it, and will break the staff of the bread
thereof, and will send famine on it, and will cut off man and beast from it:
14 Though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they should
deliver but their own souls by their righteousness, said the Lord GOD.
15 If I cause noisome beasts to pass through the land, and they spoil it, so
that it be desolate, that no man may pass through because of the beasts:
16 Though these three men were in it, as I live, said the Lord GOD, they
shall deliver neither sons nor daughters; they only shall be delivered, but
the land shall be desolate.
17 Or if I bring a sword on that land, and say, Sword, go through the land;
so that I cut off man and beast from it:
18 Though these three men were in it, as I live, said the Lord GOD, they
shall deliver neither sons nor daughters, but they only shall be delivered
themselves.
19 Or if I send a pestilence into that land, and pour out my fury on it in
blood, to cut off from it man and beast:
20 Though Noah, Daniel, and Job were in it, as I live, said the Lord GOD,
they shall deliver neither son nor daughter; they shall but deliver their
own souls by their righteousness.
16:46 And your elder sister is Samaria, she and her daughters that dwell at
your left hand: and your younger sister, that dwells at your right hand, is
Sodom and her daughters.
47 Yet have you not walked after their ways, nor done after their
abominations: but, as if that were a very little thing, you were corrupted
more than they in all your ways.
48 As I live, said the Lord GOD, Sodom your sister has not done, she nor her
daughters, as you have done, you and your daughters.
49 Behold, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom, pride, fullness of
bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither
did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.
50 And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I
took them away as I saw good.
51 Neither has Samaria committed half of your sins; but you have multiplied
your abominations more than they, and have justified your sisters in all
your abominations which you have done.
52 You also, which have judged your sisters, bear your own shame for your
sins that you have committed more abominable than they: they are more
righteous than you: yes, be you confounded also, and bear your shame, in
that you have justified your sisters.
53 When I shall bring again their captivity, the captivity of Sodom and her
daughters, and the captivity of Samaria and her daughters, then will I bring
again the captivity of your captives in the middle of them:
18:18 As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, spoiled his brother
by violence, and did that which is not good among his people, see, even he
shall die in his iniquity.
19 Yet say you, Why? does not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When
the son has done that which is lawful and right, and has kept all my
statutes, and has done them, he shall surely live.
20 The soul that sins, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of
the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the
righteousness of the righteous shall be on him, and the wickedness of the
wicked shall be on him.
21 But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he has committed, and
keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely
live, he shall not die.
22 All his transgressions that he has committed, they shall not be mentioned
to him: in his righteousness that he has done he shall live.
23 Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? said the Lord GOD:
and not that he should return from his ways, and live?
21:21 For the king of Babylon stood at the parting of the way, at the head
of the two ways, to use divination: he made his arrows bright, he consulted
with images, he looked in the liver.
22 At his right hand was the divination for Jerusalem, to appoint captains,
to open the mouth in the slaughter, to lift up the voice with shouting, to
appoint battering rams against the gates, to cast a mount, and to build a
fort.
23 And it shall be to them as a false divination in their sight, to them
that have sworn oaths: but he will call to remembrance the iniquity, that
they may be taken.
24 Therefore thus said the Lord GOD; Because you have made your iniquity to
be remembered, in that your transgressions are discovered, so that in all
your doings your sins do appear; because, I say, that you are come to
remembrance, you shall be taken with the hand.
25 And you, profane wicked prince of Israel, whose day is come, when
iniquity shall have an end,
22:1 Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
2 Now, you son of man, will you judge, will you judge the bloody city? yes,
you shall show her all her abominations.
3 Then say you, Thus said the Lord GOD, The city sheds blood in the middle
of it, that her time may come, and makes idols against herself to defile
herself.
4 You are become guilty in your blood that you have shed; and have defiled
yourself in your idols which you have made; and you have caused your days to
draw near, and are come even to your years: therefore have I made you a
reproach to the heathen, and a mocking to all countries.
24:21 Speak to the house of Israel, Thus said the Lord GOD; Behold, I will
profane my sanctuary, the excellency of your strength, the desire of your
eyes, and that which your soul pities; and your sons and your daughters whom
you have left shall fall by the sword.
22 And you shall do as I have done: you shall not cover your lips, nor eat
the bread of men.
23 And your tires shall be on your heads, and your shoes on your feet: you
shall not mourn nor weep; but you shall pine away for your iniquities, and
mourn one toward another.
35:5 Because you have had a perpetual hatred, and have shed the blood of the
children of Israel by the force of the sword in the time of their calamity,
in the time that their iniquity had an end:
39:23 And the heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into
captivity for their iniquity: because they trespassed against me, therefore
hid I my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so
fell they all by the sword.
24 According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions have
I done to them, and hid my face from them.
Dan 8:23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the
transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and
understanding dark sentences, shall stand up.
9:11 Yes, all Israel have transgressed your law, even by departing, that
they might not obey your voice; therefore the curse is poured on us, and the
oath that is written in the law of Moses the servant of God, because we have
sinned against him.
12 And he has confirmed his words, which he spoke against us, and against
our judges that judged us, by bringing on us a great evil: for under the
whole heaven has not been done as has been done on Jerusalem.
13 As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil is come on us: yet
made we not our prayer before the LORD our God, that we might turn from our
iniquities, and understand your truth.
16 O LORD, according to all your righteousness, I beseech you, let your
anger and your fury be turned away from your city Jerusalem, your holy
mountain: because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers,
Jerusalem and your people are become a reproach to all that are about us.
Am 3:6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be
afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD has not done it?
7 Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he reveals his secret to his
servants the prophets.
5:18 Woe to you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you?
the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light.
19 As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the
house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him.
20 Shall not the day of the LORD be darkness, and not light? even very dark,
and no brightness in it?
9:8 Behold, the eyes of the Lord GOD are on the sinful kingdom, and I will
destroy it from off the face of the earth; saving that I will not utterly
destroy the house of Jacob, said the LORD.
Jon 1:1 Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai,
saying,
2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their
wickedness is come up before me.
3:1 And the word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying,
2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the preaching that
I bid you.
3 So Jonah arose, and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD.
Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days’ journey.
4 And Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried, and
said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.
5 So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on
sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.
6 For word came to the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he
laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
7 And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the
decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd
nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:
8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily to God:
yes, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that
is in their hands.
9 Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce
anger, that we perish not?
10 And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God
repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do to them; and he did
it not.
4:9 And God said to Jonah, Do you well to be angry for the gourd? And he
said, I do well to be angry, even to death.
10 Then said the LORD, You have had pity on the gourd, for the which you
have not labored, neither made it grow; which came up in a night, and
perished in a night:
11 And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more then
six score thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and
their left hand; and also much cattle?
Zep 3:7 I said, Surely you will fear me, you will receive instruction;
so their dwelling should not be cut off, howsoever I punished them: but they
rose early, and corrupted all their doings.
Zec 1:3 Therefore say you to them, Thus said the LORD of hosts; Turn
you to me, said the LORD of hosts, and I will turn to you, said the LORD of
hosts.
4 Be you not as your fathers, to whom the former prophets have cried, saying,
Thus said the LORD of hosts; Turn you now from your evil ways, and from your
evil doings: but they did not hear, nor listen to me, said the LORD.
5 Your fathers, where are they? and the prophets, do they live for ever?
6 But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets,
did they not take hold of your fathers? and they returned and said, Like as
the LORD of hosts thought to do to us, according to our ways, and according
to our doings, so has he dealt with us.
