ARE UFOS SPACECRAFTS?

Let us begin by assuming that UFOs (Unidentified Flying Objects) are not spacecrafts or strange objects, but they are actually spirits that can appear as humanoids and delude people. We can find a lot of support for this statement in several observations. These seem to suggest that if there are UFOs, they are nothing like spacecrafts but something entirely different:

Not everyone sees them. One of the best arguments against the statement that UFOs are real spacecrafts is that not all people see them at the same time, even though they are looking in the same direction. It is possible that even though a large group of people stands looking at the sky, only a few members of this group can actually see a spacecraft of some sort, while the others see nothing out of the ordinary.

Some good illustrations of this point are found in books written by UFO enthusiasts. Consider the honestly described example provided in Andrija Puharich's book Uri Geller, elämä ja mysteeri (p. 190,191,353 – "Uri, A Journal of the Mystery of Uri Geller). His example seems to indicate that instead of seeing real spacecrafts, it may only be a matter of psychic visions. These visions resemble ordinary dreams, which each of us can have and which take place only on an individual level, in our minds:

Uri, Ila, and I sat on the back seat of the command car, the driver and two other soldiers on the front seat. Suddenly, Uri pointed his finger directly at the peak of the mountain under the spacecraft, asking them in Hebrew, "What is that?"

All three looked directly at the spacecraft, saying, “There is only a mountain and a blue sky. What do you see?" Uri did not want to say what he saw, but urged them to look closely at the point in the sky where the spacecraft was. None of them saw the spacecraft. Finally they asked Uri, "What is so important about that point?"

Uri said lightly, "I believed there was a UFO." They took his words as a joke and turned their eyes away from the mountain. Uri, Ila, and I – on the other hand – watched as if enchanted. (…)

Yes, I admit that it is possible that there was no spacecraft. Three soldiers in the command car did not see anything, because there may have been nothing to see in the first place. I admit that the picture of a spacecraft was already there in our minds. However, I believe that some highly intellectual being put that vision there. The flight of the magnificent metallic spacecraft above the desert of Sinai is still a clear picture in my mind today.

Others were driving along the road in the same direction as we, while others were driving in the opposite direction. The three of us noticed quite soon that the other drivers were not looking in the same direction as we. I knew, on the grounds of earlier experiences, that these displays were “for our eyes only”. I could not understand how others did not see what we saw, since the entire area was brightly lit.

Mysterious sightings. Another reason to doubt the existence of UFOs is that they often appear in the desert and in sparsely populated areas. Most UFO sightings occur in remote and deserted places, never in the middle of large groups of people, in crowded markets, or in cities.

A good question to ask ourselves, then, is “Do these visits happen mainly in our minds?”  (Do not abandon the possibility that some occurrences are real, concrete phenomena) This alternative idea about internal visions seems to be likely, because we have never heard stories about UFOs landing in the centers of towns or market squares where everyone could thoroughly examine them at leisure. Instead, the phenomena in question seem to take place generally in remote areas, where there are not many eye-witnesses:

Let us study a few typical claims that people who have met humanoids often present.

If a visitor from outer space arrived and wanted to prove his existence to mankind, he would only need to park his saucer in the market place. Why does he appear secretly and only to those who are already sworn supporters of the UFO hypothesis? A typical answer to this is that the visitors do not want to be observed since they are here only to observe the mankind. On the other hand, some people think that civilization on the Earth has not yet reached a level high enough to receive the visitors – obviously, these contact persons are then more civilized than ordinary people. In any case, these same people do their utmost to make everybody else believe in the existence of these visitors. Here, we have an interesting conflict.

People who have been in contact with UFOs often say that they have an important message to tell to mankind. However, this message is nearly always restricted to something lame like, "Live in peace and stop the wars," or "Stop destroying nature." These are quite good thoughts as such, but we do not need anyone exceptionally intelligent from outer space to tell us something like that. If a humanoid were to let us know just one thing that mankind did not already know and that could be verified afterwards, the credibility of UFO accounts would tremendously increase. (1)

Transformations and other peculiarities. If we stick with the idea that UFOs are not solid and material spacecrafts, we can see that the idea is supported by the following observations. These observations show us that they have very little to do with any material and solid forms. Instead, they seem to support the notion mentioned earlier: it has to do with the deceitful world of spirits or internal visions of humans.

Transformations are ordinary for many UFOs. One moment they can be in the form of a disk and the next can be ball-shaped or long. They can also disappear as quickly as they appeared and materialize as well as disappear from view. If they were ordinary, material things, these sudden changes would surely not be possible – especially if there are passengers inside them, as is supposed. John Keel, a well-known UFO researcher explains:

The statistical data (…) indicates that flying saucers are not stable machines. (…) They are probably energies changing from one form to another, so they do not exist in the same way as this book. They are not permanent structures of material. (2)

UFOs can travel at enormous speeds, sometimes over 15 times faster than the speed of sound. They can also suddenly change direction at steep angles and great speeds. It has also been observed that they are not subject to the laws of gravity and can stay still, without moving, in one place in the air for long periods of time. These speeds and extraordinary features would be impossible for ordinary spacecrafts.

The lack of evidence. Although many people who have been contacted by UFOs believe that they have been inside these UFOs exploring them (many of them, in addition to New Age people, sincerely believe that they are visitors from faraway stars such as Sirius) there is very little evidence supporting these stories of spacecrafts, because there are no photographs of the interiors of them or any other reliable data. Nor have these things been reported to any large groups of scientists who could examine the UFOs, or at least get a decent look at them.

This brings us back to the possibility that perhaps UFOs are not solid and made out of material similar to Earthly aircraft or cars. If they were solid matter, we would certainly have found more evidence.

The following statement of John Kiel also refers to the same issue. It is a combination of the comments of several eye-witnesses, and it is interesting to note that many of them did not regard UFOs as being mechanical in any way:

Time and time again, eye-witnesses have told me with a faint voice, 'I think the object I saw was not mechanical. I felt as if it was alive.”(3)

Mental development. A feature, which is often connected with UFOs is that the beings are extremely intelligent and mentally more developed than us.

This is mysterious. Why do these beings, if they are more developed than us, do insignificant things such as stopping cars, disturbing and frightening people, taking specimens of the Earth, and creeping around people at night? Why do these beings, who are so much more advanced than us travel astronomically long journeys just to carry out such meaningless tasks? Behavior like this would not be expected from a more civilized being.

The next quote addresses the same argument. Ingerlise Provstgaard – who was in contact with UFOs, practiced automatic writing, and was later set free – tells about how the promises she received from the UFOs again and again remained unfulfilled:

We had been promised that we would get to meet humanoids from space together with Svend's fiancé Bente who had been with us during our experiments, albeit not as wholeheartedly. Several times we received messages about how we should react and prepare ourselves to meet those humanoids. Then we were ordered to drive to a certain place at a certain time and to wait there.

However, time and time again we were delayed by circumstances that eventually led to the meeting never taking place at all.

We might, for example, receive a message stating that we had not yet learned enough about the conditions of higher realms, and for this reason we were not yet ready to meet them. Or we were told that it had only been a test to see if we were really ready to go. Once, we received a last minute instruction to persuade a fourth person – another fellow worker – to come with us. It was already late when we stood at his door, determined to tell this confused man that he had to come with us to meet a UFO. He said he was not interested at all and after we complained that because of him the meeting could not take place, he reacted to it very calmly. We had to give up.

After each time a meeting was cancelled, our disappointment was eased with encouraging and promising words. We would soon, very soon be able to see "our sisters and brothers in the heavens of space". And all this time, I was taught by automatic writing about how things work and how they live their lives on this higher level where we too would be taken, once we were ready. (4)

From Venus and Mars. When investigating the origins of the UFOs, it is interesting to note that they are often said to be from the nearest planets, such as Saturn, Venus, and Mars. They have informed us that they come from these nearest planets, even though we might have assumed that they originated in the further reaches of outer space. (For example, Bolearis; tulemme avaruudesta by Rolf Telano, written in 1954, presents that the writer was in touch "with the high priestess of the main temple of Venus" and that humanoids from Venus visited Earth several times during the millennia and helped the inhabitants of the Earth.)

A problem arises from the previous idea: these spacecrafts owned by the inhabitants of the nearest planets, Venus and Mars, and the inhabitants of these planets themselves seem to be missing. Over the last few decades, the nearest planets have been observed through powerful earth-based telescopes, and explored by space probes, yet we have found no evidence whatsoever of any life or technologies created by lifeforms, such as spacecrafts (UFOs.) These planets seem deserted. Why is this? This is what leads us to the thought that if UFOs exist and come from these planets, they cannot exist in the form of concrete matter.

They cannot be distinguished. If we continue our line of reasoning based on an assumption that UFOs are not real spacecrafts, we can see that people who claim to have been in contact with UFOs or astral spirits are themselves not able to distinguish between them, since the effects from contacts are very similar. Their authenticity cannot be verified because both UFOs and astral spirits are unstable, communicate in similar fashion, and constantly appear then disappear.

In the following article from the magazine Ultra, “Need for Crisis Service in the Area of Paranormal Information," there is an example of this. The article discusses the view that UFOs are not necessarily material crafts, as has been suggested, but that there must be another explanation for their existence:

Otherwise, on the grounds of my experience and the experiences of others, I have noticed that in many cases it is very difficult to distinguish between contacts with UFOs and contacts with spirits of the astral world. Both are visible and invisible. The messages come sometimes in words, sometimes as impulses to one’s consciousness. The effects are also very similar. (5)
